Great book by an incredible genius very well read
Revisado: 03-11-24
This book was a joy to listen too and felt like Nikola Tesla was reading it to me personally. Everything I had learned about Tesla before was brought out in his autobiography in a most personal and meaningful way. He talked about his childhood, the influence of his mother, his psychological quirks; obsession with 3’s, fear of pierced ears and caring for pigeons, in ways that were very revealing but also matter of fact. It was also concise, fascinating and quick moving. He was an incredible genius. He concieved, analyzed and documented an amazing number of inventions including radio to robots, automatons with what is now called artificial intelligence and of course Alternating Current with its Brushless Induction Motor. Hence the electric car. Hence Tesla. I gained a whole new appreciation for why Elon Musk gave or retained the name Tesla for his electric cars as what I now see as long overdue credit. Nikola Tesla was a tinker, a thinker and an inventor but if all lacking it might have been in his business savvy. Thomas Edison is the name we all know and celebrate but Tesla actually gave us the modern world. This book is also overlooked as far as I can tell because I’m the first one to review it. Please, if you see this, buy this. You will not be disappointed.

Not a religion
Revisado: 09-02-23
That was a great start to a very practical discussion. People take their religion, their belief in their religion very seriously to the exclusion of any other thought process that may also be true. Therefore stating that Buddhism is Not a Religion is a powerful premise to allow someone with a curious mind to learn about a practice, we’ll call it a practice, that my be helpful in perusing a peaceful and productive life. The author’s emphasis was on the practice of meditation. With the theory that if you practice meditation you may find yourself in a state of Nirvana but, he cautions, don’t go looking for nirvana, just be content to practice meditation. I have not experienced Nirvana or anything close. I have tried to meditate to simply try it because you hear so much about it. I’m not so sure it’s real or that Buddhism is true but I do find it as a way to approach sleep and sleep is good enough.

Historia
In September 1870, Truman Everts was separated from one of the first exploratory parties in what is now Yellowstone National Park. With little food, equipment, or cold-weather clothing, Everts spent more than a month wandering the wilderness before two mountaineers found him alive: frostbitten, scalded, and delirious. Nobody else has been lost so long in Yellowstone and survived.

Incredible narrative in eloquent prose
Revisado: 01-29-20
Extremely well read as well, this firsthand account of exploring the Yellowstone caldera wilderness, becoming separated from the group, lost and ultimately found, explores the depths of human emotion, instinct and shear will to survive beyond anything I’ve ever imagined or read before.

Historia
When the famous German author Sebastian Haffner died at the age of 91 in 1999, a manuscript was discovered among his unpublished papers. The book was begun in 1939, but with the advent of World War II, Haffner had set it aside. His family made the decision to publish it, and the book became a best seller in Germany in 2002. Spanning the period from 1907 to 1933, it offers a unique perspective on how the average educated German grappled with the rise of Hitler.

Terrifying and Enlightening
Revisado: 12-14-18
The reading is brisk and eloquent. One feels drawn into the authors firsthand experience as he pursues a normal life in his country but is continually shaped by forces beyond his control around him. The rise of what would become identified as the Nazis, was initially subtle and surreptitious until it became pervasive and overwhelming. Even then, the author sees himself as an individual simply playing a role while secretly maintaining his true character. I see this book as a warning with deep and profound insights into human nature, group identity and social control. We cannot take freedom and democracy for granted but how do we protect and defend it from ourselves?

Historia
Ever wonder why giving anesthesia is described as hours of boredom with moments of panic? With gentle precision, anesthesiologist Wolf Pascoe teases apart an overlooked world and unveils the eggshell dance that takes place at the head of an operating table. Intrigued or spooked by what happens in an operating theatre? Breathing for Two is a seat on the stage, a short book that will change the way you think about life and breath.

Technical Information Delivered from the Heart!
Revisado: 06-14-17
Where does Breathing for Two rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I consider this book one of the best I have read and listened too. I plan to re-read and re-listen to both the kindle and audible versions to highlight terminology and other insights in the book I want to remember. This is not a novel but it's not a textbook yet it's a little of both. I think the intensity and sincerity of the book in the authors own words and his own voice just made the book and Audible version extremely interesting and valid. I would say that's generally true. The authors voice truly ads to the books authenticity. Can you imagine if Albert Einstein had narrated his own biography?
Who was your favorite character and why?
The author, Wolf Pascoe, did a superior job in writing the book and then delivering the book in his own words and conversational style. I so appreciate the way he introduced and explained technical terms for instruments, procedures and chemistry in a way that was both professional and yet understandable to a lay person.
Which character – as performed by Wolf Pascoe – was your favorite?
The author as a character and as a doctor was most respectable and endearing in his honesty, vulnerability and humanity. I recently had surgery. The CRNA came into my room to introduce herself and explain the process. She asked me to open my mouth and say ahhhh. Then she seemed very pleased. It made me feel good, just her pleasant, positive nature. But now, thanks to Beathing for Two, I think I know why. My open mouth revealed a clear path for intubation. Finally, a worthy use for my Big Mouth!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
I would strongly recommend this book as part of a students curriculum in med school because it humanizes both the doctor and the patient. It emphasizes the working relationships between the doctor and patient and the anesthesiologist and the rest of the medical team. As a documentary the tag might be: While you were Sleeping - Not everyone was napping!
Any additional comments?
Breathing for Two
My daughter is a CRNA, Certified Nurse Anethistist. I watched her carefully choose her intended profession after graduating Pre-Med with honors and then watched her earn a nursing degree, again with honors, apply herself in the field of nursing, earning the respect of her peers and then returning to school and hours upon hours of study graduating again, with honors, all in order to earn those letters, CRNA and enter the field as described in my first sentence. I have never seen such devotion, dedication and perseverance as demonstrated by my own daughter in the persuit and practice of her profession and yet, because I don't have a medical education it was hard for her to explain exactly what she does. This book helped me better understand the intricacies and complexities of her world. It gives me some understanding of her knowledge base and what she must be going through every day. And, as if there were any natural limits on a fathers pride, the insights provided by Breathing for Two, has redefined the pride I have in my daughter as limitless.

Historia
At once provocative and laugh-out-loud funny, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother ignited a global parenting debate with its story of one mother’s journey in strict parenting. Amy Chua argues that Western parenting tries to respect and nurture children’s individuality, while Chinese parents typically believe that arming children with skills, strong work habits, and inner confidence prepares them best for the future.

Excellent
Revisado: 01-18-11
To Mrs. Amy Chua I say Thank you for writing and for narrating your story of love and passion for excellence in your self, you family and your children. Do not appologize and do not retreat from your values and those you have indpired and instilled in your children. I worked for many years with "emotionally disturbed" , "youth at risk" and i felt that our "theraputic programs" and psychological labels were doing more harm than good. Your "Chinese Mother" values are the American values of yester year and much of what America needs today. I think that this book is something that everyone should read and learn from. First understand that this mother LOVES and REPECTS her children deeply and it is within that context that her demands for excellence are made. These intimate stories reveal a most dedicated parent willing to spendi so much quality time with her children and working with them through every challenge. Amy Chua is NOT Mommy Dearest and is not Abusive, although there were exchanges that were volcanic, I actually laughed knowing what a battle ground parenting can be. Amy Chua shows us the genius is in fact 90% perspiration, 10% inspiration but it is done with 100% Dedication and Love.

Douglass spent his first 20 years in slavery, before escaping to the North. As a slave, he experienced both the kindness of his master's wife, who taught him to read, as well as the cruelty of sadistic overseers. This powerful story helped recruit many to the abolitionist cause.

Excellent and Timely
Revisado: 11-22-08
I was very moved by this autobiography of an American Hero. This book is not a novel not a piece of clever or cruel fiction but a real life account of a time in American history that marks just how far we have come today. I have talked about this book and recommended it to everyone I know.
