Contrasting and Mesmerizing
Revisado: 08-28-24
The history of Budapest as told by this author and read by this narrator is absolutely fascinating. Eastern Europe has always held a fascination for me. It is so turbulent; from marauding golden hordes to imperial monarchies, they’ve endured so much.
Budapest has a rich history full of tragedy and triumph; barbarity and compassion.
I loved how this story was told. It would take one of Hungarian descent to tell it so beautifully.

Historia
Winter, 1933. Kitty Underhay is enjoying a restorative break from sleuthing on a visit to her family at Enderley Hall. The only thing marring her peace - aside from the uncomfortable sensation she has of being watched - is the obvious history between her beau, ex-army captain Matthew Bryant and another guest, the beautiful Juliet Vanderstafen. So, when the parish clerk is found dead on her front doorstep, Kitty leaps at the chance of distraction.

Historia
June 1933. Independent, young Kitty Underhay has been left in charge of her family’s hotel, The Dolphin, on the tranquil English coast. But when several rooms are broken into and searched, including Kitty’s own, she quickly realizes that something out of the ordinary is afoot at the hotel. Soon, rumors are flying in the cozy town that someone is on the hunt for a stolen ruby. A ruby that Kitty’s mother may well have possessed when she herself went missing during the Great War.

My Next Fave English Mystery Series
Revisado: 08-02-21
The plot buildup was excellent. There was no dearth of suspects, some were just plain old despicable, while others were a bit sympathetic. In spite of the surrounding danger, the author still managed to keep a lightness that I found enjoyable and welcoming. I’m starting the next book in the series and I hope it won’t let me down.

Historia
The riveting history of a beautiful queen, a shocking murder, a papal trial - and a reign as triumphant as any in the Middle Ages. On March 15, 1348, 22-year-old Joanna I, queen of Naples, stood trial for the murder of her husband before the pope and his court in Avignon. Determined to defend herself, Joanna won her acquittal against overwhelming odds. Victorious, she returned to Naples and ruled over one of Europe's most prestigious courts for the next three decades - until she herself was killed.

Forgotten Queen Regnant
Revisado: 03-23-21
This is my second time listening to this book. The first time was through my library’s streaming service. The book was so good, I decided to purchase it for my own digital library.
The times in which Joanna lived were fascinating, and treacherous for a woman ruling in her own right. But she succeeded in spite of the odds - domineering husbands and scheming relatives.
I wasn’t a fan of the narration and was sadly glad when Petrarch finally died so I would no longer suffer hearing his name being butchered by the narrator.
But overall - a great book!

Historia
Young Elizabeth Stuart was thrust into a life of wealth and splendor when her godmother, Queen Elizabeth I, died and her father, James I, ascended to the illustrious throne of England. At 16 she was married to a dashing German count far below her rank, with the understanding that James would help her husband achieve the crown of Bohemia. Her father's terrible betrayal of this promise would ruin "the Winter Queen", as Elizabeth would forever be known, imperil the lives of those she loved, and launch a war that would last for 30 years.

Great Book - Narration: Meh
Revisado: 09-21-18
The author did a tremendously great job of combining the various family and historical events and maintain our attention. The narrators mispronunciations of words and names such as Liselotte drove me crazy. But maybe I’ve just gotten used to it being pronounced differently in other narrations such as Love and Louis XIV by Antonia Fraser. Anyway...great book. I’m sure I’ll listen to it again since I’ve purchased it.

An Awesome Biography
Revisado: 09-20-17
I love history and the history of le Roi Soleil is fascinating and scintillating! He is such a contrast of characteristics - debauched, yet pious. Lady Antonia Fraser captures all of this in a way that makes this book hard to put down or in the case of Audible, hard to turn off!
