Historia
Already infamous for the arbitrary, paranoid persecution of its own citizens throughout much of the 20th century, the Soviet Union - as is revealed in John Koeher’s revelatory, eye-opening exposé - also waged a vicious espionage campaign against the Catholic Church and its followers. From the persecution of local priests to an assassination order against Pope John Paul II, the KGB viewed Catholicism as a threat to stability in Eastern Europe and treated the church as an enemy of the State. Lifetime journalist and former U.S. Army Intelligence Officer John Koehler has written the definitive book on this startling history.

Glad to have read it

What made the experience of listening to Spies in the Vatican the most enjoyable?
The reviews for this book seemed to be quite wide-ranging--so I purchased with some trepidation. I went into it with a basic working knowledge of the subject matter and still very much enjoyed and learned from the content. So, I found it to be well worth it.
What other book might you compare Spies in the Vatican to and why?
AA-1025 Available from Tan (I believe). Further info on the deliberate Communist infiltration of the church. Also "Staziland" which gives ample insight into methods and the general ubiquitousness of the communist intellegence services.
What does Robert Blumenfeld bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The reading is very three dimensional - he brings good emphasis and emotion to the text.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The level of cooperation with the communists is enough to make anybody cringe - and there were so many examples of this over and over again in the book.

Historia
The Riddle of the Sands, regarded as the first great modern spy story, had an immense influence on the official and popular imagination of the early 20th century. Against the backdrop of the Anglo-German Great Naval Race, Carruthers and his friend, Davies, explore the Frisian Islands in the North Sea. Their discovery of a carefully laid plan for the invasion of England creates a spellbinding adventure story.

Excellent read for Naval-minded history buffs
Revisado: 05-01-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, I would recommend, and especially for those who enjoy sailing and all things Naval. This veteran of the Navy and avid sailor certainly appreciated it. I think it would be good enough to satisfy the average land lubber, but certainly the appeal would be strongest for the nautically minded.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
It was great to guess along with the characters as to the activities and intentions of the Germans, also, it fleshes out background strategic details of WWI naval history that continue to fascinate.
Which scene was your favorite?
Certainly all the sailing and nautical details that permeated the entire book.

Historia
There are tales of Middle-earth from times long before The Lord of the Rings. The story told in this book is set in the great country that lay beyond the Grey Havens in the West: lands where Treebeard once walked, but which were drowned in the great cataclysm that ended the First Age of the World.

Tolkein's Great Tragedy - Another Great Tale
Revisado: 10-01-12
What did you love best about The Children of Hurin?
This is a tale that spins off from the Silmarillion - from the ages before LOTR. If you like that, you'll like this. It is a tragic tale, finished off in the editing by his son and literary executor, Christopher, that contains the full measure of Tolkien's mastery of the mythical genre. If you like Tolkien this would be required reading.
What about Christopher Lee’s performance did you like?
Christopher Lee's performance is powerful and moving. His reading of Tolkein's many tough-to-pronounce names is carefully done and a pleasure to listen to. I was really pleased by the narration.

Historia
In Reasons to Believe, Scott Hahn, a convert to Catholicism, explains the "how and why" of the Catholic faith - drawing from Scripture, his own struggles, and those of other converts, as well as from everyday life and even natural science. Hahn shows that reason and revelation, as well as nature and the supernatural, are not opposed to one another; rather, they offer complementary evidence that God exists. He is someone, and He has a personality, a personal style, that is discernable and knowable.

A Profitable Use of My Time
Revisado: 10-01-12
Where does Reasons to Believe rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I really enjoyed this and profited from Scott Hahn's accessible and easy going style. Don't shy away if you are not Catholic--about 2/3's is not Catholic-specific and would be an excellent review of common sense Christianity for just about anyone. Well worth my time!
