Plainly Ben Collins did not understand military terms and ranks and they work, for example AAG stands for Assistant Adjutant General. It is not a rank it’s a job. When read aloud like this Assistant Adjutant, General so and so. With the pause after adjutant it sound a reference to a person with rank of General. In addition the “s” is silent when pronouncing Illinois. Since this well written features hundreds of references to Illinois offering the correct pronunciation is a must.

The overall performance was good, however, my pet peeve regarding military books is pronouncing names properly and understanding the meaning of military terms. The REAL problem with this volume are the author’s factual errors (e.g. Grant was never commander of the Army of the Potomac) which are numerous AND the author’s willingness to rehash bankrupt theories about the overall conflict. The only redeeming factor was the readers good voice.

Only one problem and honestly I lost count - there were at least 25 repeated sentences - as in take one and take two of the reading. I assume there must some "proof listening" in the production, but in this case many were missed. Otherwise it was a great listen as it was a great read.

My only objection was the voice of Sherman ... I'm not sure he sounded like Walter Brennan

Once the reader gets passed Mr Dowdey's opinions the book is reasonably well written. The problem, and it's a BIG problem, is the narration. The reader is completely unaware of how the military works, mispronounces word after word and absolutely butchers the pronunciation of the names of many of the generals involved in the story. For example, Phillip Kearny's surname is pronounced Carney like the chili, General Huger was of French descent and pronounced his name "uzay". The list goes on and on it was so galling that I could barely listen to it. Sadly the narrator has a good voice and had he done the simplest of research could have had an excellent performance - I cannot recommend this book to any audible reader.
