Just the Facts - Excellent!
Revisado: 08-30-24
I love hearing in depth facts and research with a lot of author-hypothesizing, and this book fits the bill, plus the narrator does an excellent job.

Historia
Inside the walls of Indiana’s elite Westmont Preparatory High School, expectations run high and rules are strictly enforced. But in the woods beyond the manicured campus and playing fields sits an abandoned boarding house that is infamous among Westmont’s students as a late-night hangout. Here, only one rule applies: don’t let your candle go out - unless you want the Man in the Mirror to find you....

Longer than it needed to be
Revisado: 06-27-24
The core idea of the story is intriguing, even if I did figure out the twist ending fairly far in advance. A lot of plot points don't make sense, except to string the story along. The chapters are very short (104 chapters in all), but the author continues to recap information over and over as if we're waiting weeks between chapters. The narrator uses a very serious, flat demeanor the entire time, with almost comically squeaky voices for most of the females. And I'm sick of hearing about Dark Lord Stout.

Historia
Imagine undergoing an operation without anesthesia performed by a surgeon who refuses to sterilize his tools - or even wash his hands. This was the world of medicine when Thomas Dent Mütter began his trailblazing career as a plastic surgeon in Philadelphia during the middle of the 19th century. Although he died at just 48, Mütter was an audacious medical innovator who pioneered the use of ether as anesthesia, the sterilization of surgical tools, and a compassion-based vision for helping the severely deformed, which clashed spectacularly with the sentiments of his time.

Enthralling!
Revisado: 07-20-23
With non-fiction, the narrator can make or break an audio book experience. Bravo to Erik Singer! I swear I hear tears in his voice at some points, so invested does he seem to be in the story of Thomas Dent Mutter. And the book itself is excellent, intriguing, engaging, exciting! Highly recommend.

Historia
La moria grandissima began its terrible journey across the European and Asian continents in 1347, leaving unimaginable devastation in its wake. Five years later, 25 million people were dead, felled by the scourge that would come to be called the Black Death. The Great Mortality is the extraordinary epic account of the worst natural disaster in European history - a drama of courage, cowardice, misery, madness, and sacrifice that brilliantly illuminates humankind's darkest days when an old world ended and a new world was born.

Couldn’t finish with 2 hours left
Revisado: 03-29-23
The narration of this was so slow that I increased the playback speed, which I never do. I wanted more focus on the Black Death, but got meandering, over-detailed histories of all sorts of random things. Maybe reading in print it would’ve been easier to keep track of what was happening.

Magic, Through and Through
Revisado: 05-03-21
A wonderful narration of this lovely story. The Yorkshire speech was delightful and each character was brought to life beautifully. Especially enjoyed listening as spring came - I knelt alongside Mary, finding green points pushing their way up through the dark earth, and discovering which plants were still wick after our hard winter freeze.
