General Alex Dumas is a man almost unknown today, yet his story is strikingly familiar—because his son, the novelist Alexandre Dumas, used his larger-than-life feats as inspiration for such classics as The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers.

Enthralling History
Revisado: 10-26-24
One of my favorite non-fiction novels, the author and narrator bring 18th century French revolution with all its ups and downs incredibly interesting, providing detailed backstories and historical insight into the life of General Alexandre Dumas. Absolutely worth the listen for all lovers of history and fans of Alexandre Dumas the son and author.

Throughout history, women have played integral roles in family, society, religion, government, war - in short, in all aspects of human civilization. Their contributions have often shaped history and shifted the axis of power for later generations of women. And yet, unearthing their stories from the historical record has often been a challenge. In Powerful Women of the Medieval World, Professor Dorsey Armstrong will introduce you to 10 amazing women who played vital roles in the Middle Ages.

From the Bible to Benjamin Franklin, from the cuneiform tablets of the ancient Sumerians to the dinner tables of modern bistros, wines have always been a part of civilization, culture, and history. Every country in the world has a special relationship with wine and takes a unique approach to the making, serving, and enjoying of it. Wine is an expression of the hopes, dreams, and cultures of the people who make it, so what better way to learn about the countries of the world than by learning about their wines?

Just started my wine journey in Fredericksburg, TX in 2023, so relatively new to the wine scene. This book was awesome for getting to know the wine regions of the world, very interesting and definitely worth the listen if you are a wine lover too.

Historia
David Sheff's story is a first: a teenager's addiction from the parent's point of view, a real-time chronicle of the shocking descent into substance abuse and the gradual emergence into hope.
Before meth, Sheff's son, Nic, was a varsity athlete, honor student, and award-winning journalist. After meth, he was a trembling wraith who stole money from his eight-year-old brother and lived on the streets. With haunting candor, Sheff traces the first warning signs, the attempts at rehabilitation, and, at last, the way past addiction. He shows us that, whatever an addict's fate, the rest of the family must care for one another, too, lest they become addicted to addiction.

Great Harrowing Truths of Addiction
Revisado: 06-08-22
i am an addict, currently in recovery. Listening to this is not for the faint of heart, but how many could remain faint when confronted with addiction and all it’s entangling webs. I highly recommend, it is humbling, it is heart wrenching, it is what it is to be an addict and love an addict.

Jurassic Park is so much better
Revisado: 05-18-22
It felt like the author tried to use the formula of jurassic park and it failed in my opinion. The addition of the kids seems forced to keep up with the JP formula and isn’t convincing as a needed plot line. This book spends too much time on the political aspects rather than the enthralling suspense that was prevalent in JP. i couldn’t finish it which is saying something since i usually do if the story is remotely interesting. Listen to Jurassic Park with Scott Brick as narrator. So.Much.Better

Professor Louis Moore’s audiobook about the history of African Americans in sports in the United States educates listeners about the fascinating social and cultural history of the nation. For example, integration of major league and professional sports broke a major color barrier for one of the first times in the early years of the Civil Rights Movement. African American athletes competed in America long before the 20th century - in fact, they even competed during the years of slavery.

Relevant and Worthy
Revisado: 04-03-22
This book goes into the role sports has played in giving rise to black rights, visibility, and inequality of race in America still prevalent today.
This book made me understand and respect more the black athletes that paved the way in bringing to light and fighting for basic civil liberties, equality, and and the right to be a black person and not be killed for it in modern day America.

Historia
In 1951, the second year of the Korean War, a studious, law-abiding, and intense youngster from Newark, New Jersey, Marcus Messner, begins his sophomore year on the pastoral, conservative campus of Ohio's Winesburg College. And why is he there and not at a local college in Newark where he originally enrolled? Because his father, the sturdy, hardworking neighborhood butcher, seems to have gone mad - mad with fear and apprehension of the dangers of adult life, the dangers of the world, the dangers he sees on every corner for his beloved boy.

Greatly written by Roth, this is the story of youthful indignation against the tides of societal judgment from adults, told through the eyes of a smart college kid that can’t help himself but to express indignation.

Historia
In an astonishing feat of empathy and narrative invention, our most ambitious novelist imagines an alternate version of American history. In 1940 Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected president. Shortly thereafter, he negotiates a cordial "understanding" with Adolf Hitler while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism.

Parallel to Trump 2016 Election
Revisado: 03-09-22
This was such a good novel, the narrator is excellent, Roth’s writing is so impeccable. The setting of the rise of Nazis in America under the administration of a right winged Republican presidency at the beginning of WWII felt like I was listening to recent affairs under the Trump administration in 2016. Roth does such a good job of building the political tension between two factions and shows how familial ties are strained in a lower middle class minority family. Seeing all of this through the eyes of the youngest member of this family balances the tension with truly funny humor in how events affect and are interpreted by this child.

This is such a funny podcast. I love this media platform for Conan and his crew. It truly highlights how funny Conan is and Sona Movsesian and Matt Gourley are the perfect counterparts to Conan, keeping him grounded and in check. I love this podcast. I laugh so hard out loud while listening to it. The guests are funnier with Conan than with or on other mediums I’ve seen them on. This is in my top 3 podcast musts.

Amazing Adventure Anthem
Revisado: 01-03-22
Don’t listen to the negative reviews, give the narrator a chance, this story is worth it and the narration improves drastically after the first chapter, he gets into a much better rhythm. If you enjoy adventure stories with twists and turns and depth that explore all aspects of humanity including the darkest, this story will have you on the edge of your seat rooting for the protagonists. Several times I audibly responded to the twists and anticipation of Kylar’s story arch. This is one of those epic adventure tales unique in its own right but worthy to be in the company of such great adventure gauntlets like The Count of Monte Cristo, or A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. I loved The Way of the Shadows and the characters Brent Weeks shares with us.
