Great story overall it's somewhat of a emotional roller-coaster believe able for a 11 or so old boy but maybe not the 13 to 14 MC is supposed to be. The kid is the weird mix of emotional and mature that all MCs seem to be.

Every time the MC seems to want to stand on business the author makes the ground shaky as hell. it's good to show that sometimes your understanding of the situation isn't always black and white but when it happens every time?! it's a little annoying especially with the mc always going back on what he just said he'd do.

I thought I was going to get an anti hero boy against false heroes story, what i got was a false hero that could never take a hardline stance on anything

There seems to be a main plot and 1 continuous subplot for each book.

The main plot of each book is just a 1 off event to distract from him trying to learn more about his Specialization which carries over from each book.

There really isn't much of a school life for this books as it was for the 1st. it's kind of disappointing 😞 I mean it's taking place in a hormone driven teen filled school and the MC is literally surrounded by nothing but females. He doesn't get 1 male friend among the students or Core. The girls show not an ounce of romantic interest in him and even share his time willingly with each other like there isn't a particular friend he values more than the other which is never the case in friendships.

I really want to see a male friend enter the group, some romance, something... right now the plot points stick out like sore thumbs we need sidequests and interest points.

Narrative:

I'll get this out the way first. plainly said the narration suck, i can barely distinguish the males from the females or one character from the other. MC doesn't have a distinct voice to himself but every other character does. Even then the only characters with very distinctive voices are probably the MC's brother and partner.

Review & Critique of the Novel itself:

I have about 3 hours left in book 2 of this series and I will state i came to all the conclusions I had about the MC in book 1. I only just found out the author was female, and it plays no role in my view towards my vehemently distaste for the MC other than a helping me realize why he felt off.

This series is precisely why i stopped reading novels by female authors especially in the prospective of teenage boys after i became an adult.

The books premise as a series is actually great, no complaints on the power mechanics or story progression. Its world and lore are very well thought out. My complaints solely lays on how horrible a person the author is trying to make the MC. Intentionally or not the author is killing the book with this MC.

The MC is a little girl in the body of a boy and im not saying transgender. No, this is a woman (the author) trying to approximate on the thoughts of a teenage male from a female prospective.

All the men with the exception of the loner are nothing but approximations of male chacharacters with very few being likable. The female characters are insufferable as well so that's at least even across the board. It's like the author wants you to hate every character but the MC's brother but even he has his out of character moments (honeysuckle especially)

I went through all of book one trying to figure out why I hated the MC so much, i can't properly put into words why the MC is such a chore to read from the prospective of, he is supposed to be sarcastic or what the author tried to portray as sarcastic but was really just barely disguised condescension. I don't know why you gave a candle makers son a hotty attitude when he is in a class full of nobles...

The author tries so hard to make the MC some puppy dog following the coat tails of his professor for approval but also romantic/rivals with a female classmate. The MC is so passive aggressive and wishy washy it drives me up a wall. The amount of times you hear the MC disparage his brother in his head but also professor love for gives me the creeps.

You get gems like the MC trying to persuade his brother not to clear up a misunderstanding because it would hurt the other person's feelings even though the brother is giving his utmost to be honest and straightforward making sure he give perspective to his reasoning so she won't find out in her own, especially since it's a pu lic event and he's tied to the hip with the person so they are sure to notice.

The brother is now in a whirlwind romance with possible hurdles

the teachers are in a romantic drama as well...

There is just so much unnecessary romantic dramas and they literally came out of nowhere in the last half of this book.
