Historia
My life was going just fine by most standards. I ran a successful business in a tight-knit magical community, and lived just blocks from a beautiful lake and series of hiking trails. Then Selene showed up. According to some magical code I inherit my aunt's ancient familiar; a grumpy ten-pound cat with a broken filter. She fancies herself something of a saber-toothed tiger, and claims to have wrestled the thread of her ninth life from the hands of the Fates themselves—although, I'm pretty sure that last part isn't true. Almost positive.

Mild
Revisado: 02-03-24
No sex or violence, plenty of mystery but not enough depth or character development. This is no Miss Marple

Orphaned. Trained to fight. Raised to fear the power of Underhill. Secretly in love with a man who doesn’t want me. I’m still just Alli, a.k.a. the half-human orphan fae, but my life is looking up for the first time. It only took me my whole 24 years. But when Underhill - the ancestral home of the fae - shatters, making it impossible for any fae to enter, I’m the only one who knows who did it. A secret that will be the death of me if I do nothing.

Cliche a looza!
Revisado: 07-14-23
In an effort to have “non stop action” this story sacrifices everything else. I could live with that if the plot had any originality at all. But it doesn’t. No art, no creative use of language, and characters right out of a box. 😮💨

Historia
A woman describes a series of encounters she has with various people in the ordinary course of her life: an ex she runs into by chance at a public forum, an Airbnb owner unsure how to interact with her guests, a stranger who seeks help comforting his elderly mother, a friend of her youth now hospitalized with terminal cancer. In each of these people, the woman finds a common need: the urge to talk about themselves and to have an audience to their experiences.

So. Much. Complaining!!!!
Revisado: 03-17-23
Monotonous singsong narration is actually appropriate for this book, and that’s what it gets. Snarky complaining throughout.

Predictable and untroubling
Revisado: 02-10-23
This would have been good if it didn’t rely on tired tropes. It’s meant to be a meditation on getting through marital troubles but if it turned out my husband had a child he knew nothing about, that wouldn’t be much of a trust issue. Now if he embezzled a fortune and lost it, we’d have us a problem. If he developed an addiction after 10 years of marriage and while we had little kids, that would be bad. If the author had charted a path through real trouble, it would have been interesting. But she didn’t do it’s a luke warm bath of a read.

A good book
Revisado: 02-05-23
This book has a good solid structure - beginning, middle, end - and recognizable characters. It's flaw is that it's so four square as to dim interest. If you want a book to listen to on a long ride, it's a good choice because it doesn't ask much of you, but it is depressingly narrated in a flat tone.

But not altogether boring. I needed something to listen to while knitting a complex pattern. I didn't want anything too gripping but not vapid either. This bit of treacle sufficed.

Historia
Eff was born a thirteenth child. Her twin brother, Lan, is the seventh son of a seventh son. This means he's supposed to possess amazing talent - and she's supposed to bring only bad things to her family and her town. Undeterred, her family moves to the frontier, where her father will be a professor of magic at a school perilously close to the magical divide that separates settlers from the beasts of the wild. With wit and wonder, Patricia Wrede creates an alternate history of westward expansion that will delight fans of both J. K. Rowling and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

I tried listening to this several times because the reviews made it sound good, but I gave up because I simply could not care about the characters or the story. The narration is flat and there just isn’t depth to the tale.

Historia
Blessed (or cursed, depending on who you ask) with human intelligence, Sir Edgar Allan Kipling, magical talking cat extraordinaire, spends most of his time keeping his human out of trouble. Of course, having a wizard for a human means that trouble is never far away. When Sir Kipling's human goes away for the weekend and leaves him to guard her magical library, things start out quiet. But he soon discovers witches smelling suspiciously of demon magic snooping about, and quiet goes out the window as chaos looms on the horizon.

Historia
Former English professor Cat Latimer is back in Colorado, hosting writers' retreats in the big blue Victorian she's inherited, much to her surprise, from none other than her carousing ex-husband. Now it's an authors' getaway, but Cat won't let anyone get away with murder. The bed-and-breakfast is open for business, and best-selling author Tom Cook is among its first guests. Cat doesn't know why he came all the way from New York, but she's glad to have him among the quirkier - and far less famous - attendees.

I kept hoping it would get better. From the old ladies stranded got out of Arsenic and Old Lace, to the cardboard characters, this book is awful.
