Historia
Janet Marsh's move into her house has been delayed due to vandalism. Then, when the women go to look for clues that might tell them who is guilty, they find a corpse (murder!) in Janet's garden shed. Constable Hobbs answers their emergency call. He's calm and quietly pleased, as he's never had a murder case. Then the contents of a dozen or so garbage bags are discovered behind the bookshop. The letters inside are nasty.

I wanted to like it, but…
Revisado: 03-30-24
Had so much promise. Great location! Fun characters! A nice light touch of humor! But it couldn’t keep my attention. And too many characters to be introduced in a cozy of such short length. I just finished it last week and I don’t even remember who the murderer was.

Great characters against a compelling landscape
Revisado: 02-05-24
Excited for this new series. Grabbed me right away. Love the characters and I always enjoy a book when the landscape too becomes a “character” and that happens here.
This big fight/chase scene was a bit drawn out; but that’s my only small complaint.

Historia
He slips into their homes at night and walks silently into bedrooms where women lie sleeping, unaware of the horrors they soon will endure. The precision of the killer's methods suggests he is a deranged man of medicine, propelling the Boston newspapers and the frightened public to name him "The Surgeon". The cops' only clue rests with another surgeon, the victim of a nearly identical crime. Two years ago, Dr. Catherine Cordell fought back and killed her attacker before he could complete his assault.

Aged poorly and needs major a trigger warning
Revisado: 02-03-24
I am reading this is 2024 and I would have predicted a mid 90’s publication date for this book but looks like it came out in 2001.
The treatment of sexual assault in the book is really terrible. First there is no getting away from it—victimization of women is THE central theme. Second, there is so much victim-blaming and toxic messaging about women who have experienced sexual assault it is hard to pay attention to the plot at all. The story seems to swim in a general broth of misogyny.
I do think some of this is due to the age of the book and maybe some folks could enjoy the book with that in mind, but I just couldn’t.
Plus, I have heard that she changes in later books but in this book Rizzoli (the main character) is petulant and annoying.

Historia
While on patrol one foggy March evening, Bowditch receives a call for help. A woman has reportedly struck a deer on a lonely coast road. When the game warden arrives on the scene, he finds blood in the road—but both the driver and the deer have vanished. And the state trooper assigned to the accident appears strangely unconcerned. The details of the disappearance seem eerily familiar. Seven years earlier, a jury convicted lobsterman Erland Jefferts of the rape and murder of a wealthy college student and sentenced him to life in prison.

Solid. Looking forward to the next one.
Revisado: 12-12-23
Discovered this series after I’d exhausted so many others of a similar ilk and I am enjoying it so far. I like these deeply placed-based crime novels and the characters are growing on me.
One note on this book at least—there are fairly offhand references about sexual assault and rape. This may be triggering for some.

Historia
In Dimpna Wilde’s veterinary practice, an imminent meteor shower has elevated the usual gossip to include talk of shooting stars and the watch parties that are planned all over Dingle. But there are also matters nearer at hand to discuss—including the ragtag caravan of young people selling wares by the roadside, and the shocking death of Chris Henderson, an elderly local, in a hit-and-run. Just hours before his death, Henderson had stormed into the Garda Station, complaining loudly about the caravan’s occupants causing noise and disruption.

Good story slightly frustrating quirks
Revisado: 11-11-23
I really love Carlene O’Connor and am enjoying this new series. But, two small niggles make these miss the mark compared to her Irish Village Mystery series. First, the characters aren’t very likable. They aren’t terrible but get under your skin—like after awhile you want to roll your eyes at them. Second, I feel like so much misunderstanding in the stories comes from people in conversation not speaking clearly about what they mean. That device gets tired and I find myself listening to the dialogue often thinking that if one person actually just clearly said what they meant ONCE all kinds of things would be cleared up!

Jo told him the phone call had been about a woman who wanted to have her husband declared dead. Smith thought for a moment and then said, 'Hmm. There must be a few million women in this country who feel like that. I take it her husband's been missing for a while and she's decided it's time to move on. In the absence of a body, which is always a nuisance, she wants Diver and Diver to confirm there's no proof he's alive. And I've told Jason a dozen times I'm not getting involved in anything matrimonial. I have enough trouble sorting out my own relationships.'

Rich characters, excellent stories, inspired narration
Revisado: 10-24-23
So good. I love these books and especially enjoyed this addition to the series. Was a bit worried at first when DC left the police, but with this book I can see that the shift to him being a PI has great possibilities. Felt like this is the book where he gets his footing in this line of work and so do we as readers.

Revisado: 10-01-23
I like the first story. Didn’t mind the third and had to entirely skip the middle one (was it a kid’s book!?). The narration didn’t do it for me either. Fine, but not worth a credit in hindsight.

Historia
When Jem Rosco—sailor, adventurer, and legend—blows into town in the middle of an autumn gale, the residents of Greystone, Devon, are delighted to have a celebrity in their midst. But just as abruptly as he arrived, Rosco disappears again, and soon his lifeless body is discovered in a dinghy, anchored off Scully Cove, a place with legends of its own. This is an uncomfortable case for Detective Inspector Matthew Venn. Greystone is a place he visited as a child, a community he parted ways with. Superstition and rumor mix with fact as another body is found, and Venn finds his judgment clouded.

Can’t keep my attention
Revisado: 10-01-23
This series just doesn’t do it for me. So many names and no one character really distinguishes themselves; it’s hard to keep them straight. And I just don’t buy the main character’s relationship. Something just missing in how it’s portrayed.
It’s just all a bit blah compared to the other series.

A moment later, she stumbles, collapsing against a tree. When a young mother finds her body and alerts the police, Detective Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and his sergeant, Doug Cullen, are called to the scene. The victim, Sasha Johnson, is a trainee doctor at a nearby hospital, and she’s been stabbed.

If you haven’t read the series this might be tough
Revisado: 03-01-23
I’ve read all of this series and even
I had a bit of a hard time keeping track of all the characters. I love how she brings them back in books as it helps you feel immersed in the journey of Gemma and Duncan but it does mean that there are many characters and references to past stories that can add a complexity to the listening. But, I do think these books overall are solid. Definitely one of my favorite series.

Callie Morgan is no ordinary aspiring writer. A notorious wife of a Washington lobbyist, Callie believes no publicity is bad publicity and that publishing her scandalous memoirs will help her achieve her heart's desire: a diplomatic posting. She just needs crime novelist Augusta Hawke to be her ghostwriter. It's hard to say no to Callie, but Augusta does agree to attend her dinner party. The guest list is impressive, and it's Augusta's chance to meet celebrity doctor Doc Burke.

Revisado: 03-01-23
I really like GM Maillet’s Max Turner books-they were charming and cheekily self-aware about their cozy-quality. I’ve given two of the Augusta Hawke books a chance now. The first one was fine but very forgettable. This one was kinda like nails on a chalkboard.
