Historia
The original Great American Novel, an incomparable adventure story and a classic of anarchic humour, Twain's masterpiece sees Huckleberry Finn and Jim the slave escape their difficult lives by fleeing down the Mississippi on a raft. There, they find steamships, feuding families, an unlikely Duke and King and vital lessons about the world in which they live. With its unforgettable cast of characters, Hemingway called this 'the best book we've ever had'.

I listened to about ten previews of different narrators, and picked this one even though it was abridged, because this was by far the best — actually made Huck sound like a kid.

Historia
The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

I liked this a lot

I think the variety in reviews is probably caused in part by the different expectations listeners bring to the story. Gone Girl it is not. A superior crime thriller it is not -- be prepared for a climax scene in which the villain engages in unnecessary exposition to helpfully wrap up some loose plot threads. What it IS is a very well-done portrait of alcoholism. Hawkins is adept at creating two psychological profiles of 30-ish adults who are adrift in life -- for whom expectations and reality have become vastly out of sync -- and who are dealing with this dissonance in flawed ways. These kinds of novels can often become boring and melodramatic, but Hawkins has also created enough mystery and action here to keep things entertaining. Plus, the readers are wonderful. I would recommend this audiobook.
