A surprise of the best variety!
Revisado: 10-04-21
I wasn't sure about this book in the beginning. It was engrossing and written in such a way as to immerse the reader in the scenes as if they were living it themselves, touching all 5 senses at the perfect moments, more so than any of the books I have read recently.
I struggled in the beginning because the plot is the very definition of slow burn and the author builds the story bit by bit leaving pieces of the story for you to follow like frustrating bread crumbs. Because it was so well written I kept listening until the pieces slowly came into focus (as intended I'm sure) and it was well worth it. The narrator was well chosen. He made it easy to distinguish between characters and to follow the story as it unfolded while never distracting from the plot by using only the changes in pitch, volume and emotion that were called for and no more.
The author has combined bitter sweet romance, mystery and spine tingling spookiness in just the right quantities to create a story that comes to life all around you. The characters are believably realistic, flawed and equal amounts endearing and l irritating and unlike far too many M/M novels the focus is on the telling of the story and not rushed relationships or one sex scene after another (though what risque tidbits there are will leave you hot and bothered in all the best ways). It also managed to really and truly give me the creeps which is no easy feat.
It's's well worth the read/listen and I can't wait to see what else the author has written so I can add it to my collection. I highly recommend experiencing it for yourself. I can't imagine anyone regretting it.

A beautiful, heart wrenching, tale of discovery.
Revisado: 08-24-21
This book would have reached me no matter what, it's one of those that let's your imagination run wild even after it's done but knowing not just that this wonderful author has passed but how and the story between him and the man he loved ended is both was sob inducing, ugly cry material and beautiful in a painful, hopeful kind of way. being able to believe that this book holds even a tiny piece of truth and possibilty gives me hope that even the saddest endings have hope.

Historia
Nick Bell? Not extraordinary. But being the most popular fan-fiction writer in the Extraordinaries fandom is a superpower, right? After a chance encounter with Shadow Star, Nova City’s mightiest hero (and Nick’s biggest crush), Nick sets out to make himself extraordinary. And he’ll do it with or without the reluctant help of Seth Gray, Nick's best friend (and maybe the love of his life).

TJ Klune NEVER disappoints!
Revisado: 07-25-21
I will sing his praises till the cows come home. TJ Klune NEVER fails to write a story that will immerse you in a new universe filled with every emotion under the sun. I admit I was skeptical about this one as it is geared toward YA while his other novels have a bit more of a biting edge that other authors just can't emulate. I enjoyed The Extraordinaries immensely it is well worth the read and the listen (because Michael Leslie is his own kind of extraordinary). I wish that I had more books like this as a young person, it would have made a huge impact on my life to be able to read about characters just like me. If it has his name on it you can be assured that it's a story not to be missed.

An excellent weaving of fantasy and reality!
Revisado: 04-27-21
I really enjoyed this story. You could tell that the author had spent real time in the setting and was able to weave that seamlessly into fiction, something that is not always easy to achieve. I grew up in Denver and could picture everything so clearly! That alone of course is not worth 5 stars but the characters were also relatable and the storyline was believable and immersive. I particularly enjoyed the main characters and their conflicts. They were real and accurate, I don't want to give anything away but so often when there is drama or angst or miscommunication in a fictional work it is overdone and could usually could be solved with a simple conversation or it's blown way out of proportion. I also really appreciated the authors take on the classic lore, he made it his own while managing to stay true to the core of the mythology. All of that makes for an enjoyable story but I think what I appreciated most was that the story was about the people and their experiences not the sexual orientation of the main character and all the sex that fills a lot of LGBT stories. I like being able to read about characters who are like me but I want a good story that I can escape to (not a smut novel) and this book did not disappoint!

A fun and funny adventure to delight!
Revisado: 02-24-21
I though the story was fun and imaginative. These story lines can often be predictable and imitative but the authors were able to make each character and their adventure unique and memorable. The narrator was fun to listen to and really brought the book to life. The whole thing reminded me of TJ Klune who is one of my favorites. I will definitely be looking for more from all three!

The author seemed a little overly descriptive about the urination practices of multiple characters. A little odd to me but other than that totally worth the listen. I look forward to the next chapter.

One moment...that's all it takes for life as you once knew it to change irrevocably. For Michael Kingston, that moment was when he first laid eyes on Gabriel. In his life, Michael had only known darkness, leaving behind a broken shell of a man. Unspeakable memories of his childhood constantly plagued him, causing him to disconnect emotionally from the world. No one had ever shown him love; therefore, he believed that he was unworthy of it. And then everything changed.
