Annoying Ruminations
Revisado: 03-14-25
Dislike when characters ruminate over and over, chapter after chapter. Annoying. Got to chapter 7, skipped to the last two, very blah end.

Ends on a cliffhanger
Revisado: 03-05-25
I have enjoyed this third novel in the Empyrean series. However, I do think there was a lot of random detail and conversation given to fill space while actual needed details were left out (many mysteries are uncovered, but not explained clearly) and I am disappointed that the story ends where it does. If the fourth book was eminently being published, it wouldn’t be a problem, but if we have to wait a whole other year to get the fourth book in the series… That’s a little annoying. Make that… a lot annoying.

If you love Dystopian!
Revisado: 02-23-25
The series is really great. Another incredible dystopian series if you enjoy dystopian stories of uprising and overthrowing, overlords and unfair regimes, loyalty, friendship and heroes.

Revisado: 02-12-25
I really enjoyed this book. I originally purchased it for my 21-year-old son, and then decided to read it myself. It started out a little slow and a little bit confusing, but then very quickly with a twist became even more interesting. The second half of the book is very much “hunger games” or even a little bit of Harry Potter/School year style. But more violent. Really good and left you wanting more.

Kept Waiting for it to get Better
Revisado: 02-04-25
Do not waste your time on this four set of books. Now I know why they were offered for free on Audible. If I hear the word “predacious“ or “Stygian” one more time, it will be too soon. Those are actually really great words. As an English teacher, bravo to the writer who can use them well. However, Heck to the no for the writer who uses them in every other chapter. It would’ve been enough to use each word once per book, but unfortunately, this author felt like those were words that needed to be repeated over and over again.
The main character explains things over and over again and goes into ridiculously long descriptions or explains what somebody is thinking of what they are like, all babbling that doesn’t move the story forward at all. So many times I felt like I was slugging through minutes upon minutes of just random, boring, explanations, or descriptions of things that had absolutely nothing to do with the plot or worse yet, had already been explained.
The narrator was odd as well, and her voice shifted several times throughout the story as if she may have had a cold. Apparently, there are more books after the fourth one that you need to purchase. I thought this was a complete set. Now I know why Audible was giving this book set away for free. So all in all, a let down. And… They did not entice me to buy the other books in the series.

Twisty
Revisado: 12-19-24
I almost stopped reading several times. The whiny main character was so co-dependent and made so many bad choices early on, that it was a little hard to believe anyone could be that stupid. Or that someone would write a story about them. Also, many long and boring descriptions of things that were very much filler and not necessary. Again, the main character’s ruminations were just annoying at many points.
However, I did read the whole thing because I wanted to find out what was going on at the school. And with Anna’s past, although the school was more of the driver. Author did a great job casting doubt and suspicion on several characters, so it wasn’t completely an easy guess as to “who dunnit” until the end.
Most of the loose ends were tied up at the end, but not all. It also would have been good to see if she followed thru with her final resolution and what the outcome of that was as well.
I’d say it was a solid 3 or maybe almost a 4 out of 5. OK read, not amazing. A good break from the fantasy fiction I had been reading.

Revisado: 11-01-24
The author did a great job weaving the lives of the main characters slowly, deliciously together. Very satisfying. Can’t wait to start the next one, however, of the first three, this was my favorite.

After the world of SJMaas and others, was looking for a new fantasy series. Story building is great. Characters are likeable. Refreshing, not heavy on romance, but that is fine.

Historia
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?
