Historia
Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

Underappreciated
Revisado: 11-13-18
We didn't deserve this in high school. I feel like schools miss the mark so badly when teaching this book when we're younger. It's deep connections to our modern society, the forms, and methods of drawering the reader in to the story weren't appreciated nearly as much as they should have been until now rereading this as an adult. Though there is a delicious irony about listening to this in an audio form...
Highly recommend.

Walt Disney was a true visionary whose desire for escape, iron determination, and obsessive perfectionism transformed animation from a novelty to an art form, first with Mickey Mouse and then with his feature films–most notably Snow White, Fantasia, and Bambi.

An interesting man
Revisado: 01-25-18
Disney was, to say the very least, a very interesting person. It was cool to hear the whole story (or one version of the story) from his failures, to his intense - though sometimes fleeting passions, to the man we know him for today.
The book overall was dry in some places, but 'tis the nature of a biography. Nevertheless, having a narrator reading out a citation or listing out numbers, makes for a somewhat tedious listen.
This was definitely one of the more thorough Disney biographies and is worth the credit!

Historia
With all of the pluck and charm of its eponymous young hero, Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Spotlight, Midnight in Paris) delivers a spectacular reading of Montgomery's beloved bildungsroman. In moments both funny and bittersweet, McAdams' voice is imbued with the spark that has made Anne a much-loved symbol of individualism and cheer for over a century.

A good fluff novel
Revisado: 12-06-17
There was nothing that really made this novel stand out to me. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't something I'd typically choose. It's a good lay in the sunshine and listen type of novel fluff story. From the description it seemed that it could be really interesting, but in the end there wasn't a lot character depth and much of the writing seemed repetitive.
Overall though, it was just a cute YA book. Just like 'chick-flicks', there's a place in this world for fluff novels :)

I was hooked
Revisado: 11-27-17
This story drew me right in. Having the multiple narrators for the different characters was the best way of handling the perspective changes throughout the story. I wish there was a little be more development in the relationships between Mia and the other characters, but overall it was a solid story.
The epilogue was a great ending, to this mystery novel. It would have been even better had that been a tad longer, it could have explored more of Mia's mind, but overall I think this was a good book.

Exciting story, hit-or-miss narration
Revisado: 11-20-17
This story was absolutely fantastic! It had the feel of a classic western-esce novel mixed with a sci-fi twist. I honestly loved the story so much that I'm going to be buying a paperback copy to give to someone for Christmas.
That being said, the narration was... eh. I loved his voice and thought that it worked perfectly for the story, but his tone/inflection didn't always match the words being read. Sometimes it felt as if he didn't understand what was actually happening in the story so his voice was too excited or too dull for what was going on. It seemed to get better as book progressed, so maybe it was an experience thing or he got more into the story, I'm not sure. Once I was invested in the story, though, I didn't care too much about any of the minor things.
I would definitely recommend this book, I just think the narrator needs a bit of coaching.

The Yellow Wallpaper is a short story by the American writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman, first published in January 1892 in The New England Magazine. It is regarded as an important early work of American feminist literature, illustrating attitudes in the 19th century toward women's health, both physical and mental.

Better suited for traditional reading
Revisado: 10-18-17
I think I'm going to have to give this book another shot, old school style. I vaguely enjoyed the story, but had trouble paying full attention with the narrator's calming voice. I felt that when it switched between past/present there should have been a more pronounced change in the narrator's tone perhaps. I'm not sure...
Exploring the ideas of anarcho-communism is intriguing, and I think Le Guin does a good job of showcasing some of the benefits, requirements, and ultimate struggles that such a society entails. Again, I think to truly get this book I would like to read it normally, or at least listen again in one setting when I can pay closer attention.

Can literature change our real world society? At its foundation, utopian and dystopian fiction asks a few seemingly simple questions aimed at doing just that. Who are we as a society? Who do we want to be? Who are we afraid we might become? When these questions are framed in the speculative versions of Heaven and Hell on earth, you won't find easy answers, but you will find tremendously insightful and often entertaining perspectives.

Wonderful introduction to The Great Courses
Revisado: 10-01-17
This was my first book from The Great Courses and I must say it was phenomenal. Utopian/dystopian novels are my favorite genre so it was really cool to hear a history or timeline of this type of story. I was so excited when I realized the audiobook came with a PDF complete with a list of "suggested readings" after each chapter! This is definitely something to read if you enjoy dystopias and are looking for more, less well known, stories (my wish list just got 20x longer)
