Historia
Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

An important story
Revisado: 07-08-24
This is the second book I listened to by this author. Admittedly I can't stop listening because the subject matter and history are so interesting. I very much appreciate her stories about the resilience of women and their undocumented place in history. The sisters and mother relationships hit close to home for me. I do think her stories drag on a bit and I wish her characters would make different choices, but these women are more realistic! My sister recommended Nightengale vs this one because she was unable to stick it out. I'll read Nightingale next.

I anticipated a different ending
Revisado: 04-28-24
I couldn't stop listening because I was interested in the ending, I did skim some of the chapters for Penny at the end because I knew they weren't going to add anything new or insightful. I had already decided how I wanted the book to end where everyone faced their demons and was redeemed in some way. The outcome feels kinda flat and matter-of-fact and less ideological and joyful then I wanted. It made me feel kinda depressed about our repeating patterns of self centeredness.

fantastic, eye opening
Revisado: 02-22-24
I was born in 1965 but the most I've ever known about the Vietnam War came from watching Forest Gump! I like historical fiction. I appreciated the rawness of the story and how the heroine and her family were not perfect. I liked how you never knew where the story was going to take you, even tho it was not where I was hoping it would go for McGrsth. I felt very moved by the book and connected to the main character.it was hard not to empathize and the pain felt very real, maybe too real, I came away with a new interest in our vetrans. I will have to read something light and vapid next!!¡

I just couldn't focus on the story over the narrators interpretation of it. I just kept thinking what am I listening to? Why does this inspiring and historical story by Mark Twain come off sounding like a cartoon?

couldn't tolerate the narrator

I'm sure it's a good book. but the narrator made the main character sound whiny and annoying . it just made me dislike him and have no interest in his future.

Great Streaming series tho! but the book...
Revisado: 09-29-23
You know how you always like the book better than the movie? Not in this case! As an audio book it didn't make a lick of sense! Kudos to the mind that turned this into a fantastic TV series! It's possible the writing style did not translate well to audio it was strangely missing all the context.

A lovely Jane Austin/Dickens Like Mystery
Revisado: 08-12-23
it was a fun and lovely mystery that was part Jane Austin part Dickens. I was pleasantly surprised this had Christian influences. I grew very attached to the characters. The novel did end quite abruptly but that's how romance novels get it done. it was easy refreshing light listening.

Nonsensical
Revisado: 03-11-21
The ending is both ridiculous and unbelievable. Oh my son came back from the dead, cut off my hand and died. I won't mourn I will immediately take the other kidnap victim go to the monument and tell him people died so the Bible could be kept secret???
