Historia
The War on Warriors uncovers the deep roots of our dysfunction—a society that has forgotten the men who take risks, cut through red tape, and get their hands dirty. The only kind of men prepared to face the dangers that the Left pretends don’t exist. Unlike issues of education or taxes or crime, this problem doesn’t have a zip code solution. We can’t move away from it. We can’t avoid it. We have only one Pentagon. Either we take it back or surrender it altogether.

Fascinating and Frightening
Revisado: 12-21-24
Hegseth is clearly a patriotic American warrior. And he rightfully documents the shift of the pendulum towards progressivism over the recent past. Of course, the fact that a portrait of Robert E. Lee in a CONFEDERATE UNIFORM was on display at West Point until 2022 suggests that the pendulum needed to shift. I do not dismiss his assertion that the pendulum has shifted too far in some dimensions but his classification of “woke progressives” as the enemy within is disturbing.

Historia
From the acclaimed authors of the runaway New York Times bestseller 2034 comes another explosive work of speculative fiction set twenty years further in the future, at a moment when a radical leap forward in artificial intelligence combines with America’s violent partisan divide to create an existential threat to the country, and the world.

Another Timely Reminder
Revisado: 05-21-24
2034 offered a well conceived reminder of the nationalistic hubris that can trigger a world war. It also underscored the importance of our men and women in uniform who pledge to uphold the constitution. 2054 addresses a different set of emerging risks and again provides hope that our great democracy can survive. I only hope that the stories remain fictional and if not relatively far into the future so we can prepare.

Historia
The United States, the richest country on earth, has more poverty than any other advanced democracy. Why? Why does this land of plenty allow one in every eight of its children to go without basic necessities, permit scores of its citizens to live and die on the streets, and authorize its corporations to pay poverty wages?

Excellent treatise on why America should return our focus to the common good and address poverty versus simply lambasting micro aggressions among the privileged. Check out the science fiction book called “I, Messenger “ (2023 expanded version) by Russell J. Marks to explore ways to find common ground.

Historia
The 2024 election could be the last free election held in a unified America. So warns Robert Kagan in this brilliant and terrifying analysis of the perilous state of democracy in the United States today. If Donald Trump loses the upcoming election, as he did in 2020, but refuses to accept the result, as he also did in the last election, he is likely to call on his millions of followers to repudiate the election results. It will be a short step from there to Republican-dominated states rejecting the legitimacy of the federal government and effectively seceding.

Surprisingly Simplistic
Revisado: 05-09-24
I was hoping for a more thoughtful and nuanced book given the author’s link to the arguably moderate Brookings Institute. I was thoroughly disappointed in the attempt to assert the current ideological divide is purely about race dating back to the issue of slavery at the nation’s founding.

Historia
Patric Gagne realized she made others uncomfortable before she started kindergarten. Something about her caused people to react in a way she didn’t understand. She suspected it was because she didn’t feel things the way other kids did. Emotions like fear, guilt, and empathy eluded her. For the most part, she felt nothing. And she didn’t like the way that “nothing” felt.

Historia
In Trafficking Data, Aynne Kokas looks at how technology firms in the two largest economies in the world, the United States and China, have exploited government policy (and the lack thereof) to gather information on citizens, putting US national security at risk. Kokas argues that US government leadership failures, Silicon Valley's disruption fetish, and Wall Street's addiction to growth have fueled China's technological goldrush.

Thought provoking
Revisado: 03-25-24
I’m not a big social media user (beyond LinkedIn and Strava) and accordingly have limited personal fear of my data being used to cause personal harm. But the author did a great job of framing the national security risks of data trafficking and the growing tensions between US and China. I was less convinced of the purely economic risks of bigger data pools to train AI but clearly see the threat of enhanced bioterrorism knowledge from mining US consumer data. Worth a read if you believe in thinking about the long term.

In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

Anti-transgender legislation is being introduced in state governments around the United States in record-breaking numbers. Trans people are under attack in sports, healthcare, school curriculum, bathrooms, bars, and nearly every walk of life. He/She/They compassionately addresses fundamental topics, from why being transgender is not a choice and why pronouns are important, to more complex issues including how gender-affirming healthcare can be lifesaving.

Historia
Robert Sapolsky’s Behave, his now classic account of why humans do good and why they do bad, pointed toward an unsettling conclusion: We may not grasp the precise marriage of nature and nurture that creates the physics and chemistry at the base of human behavior, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Now, in Determined, Sapolsky takes his argument all the way, mounting a brilliant (and in his inimitable way, delightful) full-frontal assault on the pleasant fantasy that there is some separate self telling our biology what to do.

Neurobiologist Turned Hubristic Ideologue
Revisado: 10-22-23
Interesting coverage of the critical issue of personal responsibility in society. Some classic citations of scientific studies (e.g., Phineas Gage) but many new ones of which I was unaware. For example, I was pleased to learn that voluntary exercise might be increasing my adult mental plasticity. Of course, that research was countered by a former student of the author. (Of course, I am curious how my decision to exercise could be “voluntary” or the student could be acknowledged as “great” given we have no Free Will and are merely the product of our random genetic make-up and our societal environment of which we have no control.)
Nonetheless, I do recommend the book, but caution readers to be careful of the author’s hubris and dismissiveness of other views. (In fairness, in his mind, we can not blame of praise him: he had no choice but to write this book in such a way!)

Historia
Linguists have been studying Black English as a speech variety for years, arguing to the public that it is different from Standard English, not a degradation of it. Yet false assumptions and controversies still swirl around what it means to speak and sound "Black." In his first book devoted solely to the form, structure, and development of Black English, John McWhorter clearly explains its fundamentals and rich history while carefully examining the cultural, educational, and political issues that have undermined recognition of this transformative, empowering dialect.

Insightful on Black English today as well as my own White Southern
Revisado: 10-21-23
I now better understand the “code switching “ that I do with my siblings but differently with my adult kids raised outside of the south. And why everyone in my life thinks that I have an accent since my “standard English” mixes the many places and people I have experienced in my privileged (or blessed if you prefer) life.
