Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

This story was like a summer read. The narrator was excellent and the characters were endearing. I would highly recommend this book.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

It is surprising how quickly this multigenerational epic went by. The author writes and reads beautifully, carrying me along the peaks and valleys of life as it unfolds.

From the creation of the first encyclopedia to Wikipedia, from ancient museums to modern kindergarten classes—this is Simon Winchester’s brilliant and all-encompassing look at how humans acquire, retain, and pass on information and data, and how technology continues to change our lives and our minds. Throughout this fascinating tour, Winchester forces us to ponder what rational humans are becoming. What good is all this knowledge if it leads to lack of thought? What is information without wisdom?

Good to know….
Revisado: 07-03-23
Mr. Winchester weaves together familiar threads of history and the human experience with a keen eye and deft hand, altering our tapestry of understanding enough to question what we think we know (or need to know).
Once again, his composition brings me pleasure in content and process, sometimes requiring a pause to savor his mastery of the English language.
This, like most of his books, is a delicious tale.
In gratitude.

Historia
In 1920, at the end of the last major pandemic, global life expectancy was just over 40 years. Today, in many parts of the world, human beings can expect to live more than 80 years. As a species, we have doubled our life expectancy in just one century. There are few measures of human progress more astonishing than this increased longevity.

Steven Johnson always delivers
Revisado: 12-05-22
Yet another great story of human innovation, crediting the many celebrated, and lesser known, people and events which have extended it lives by 20,000 days in the past century.
This is an excellent overview and guide to anyone interested in public health as it has unfolded in the Industrial Age. With a familiar nod to folks like John Snow and Louis Pasteur, Mr. Johnson broadens our view of factors sustaining life to include seat belts, regulation, vaccination, antibiotics and more. He tells the story in a manner that is educational, accessible and enjoyable. As usual.

Historia
The relationship between the US and China, the world’s two superpowers, is peculiarly volatile. Their militaries play a dangerous game of chicken, corporations steal intellectual property, intelligence satellites peer, and AI technicians plot. The capacity for either country to cross a fatal line grows daily. Kevin Rudd, a former Australian prime minister who has studied, lived in, and worked with China for more than forty years, is one of the very few people who can offer real insight into the mindsets of the leadership whose judgment will determine if a war will be fought.

This is a thoroughly researched, articulate account of historical, contemporary and future considerations for the relationship and international impact of Chinese and American policy and behavior. Most significant are the recommendations by author Kevin Rudd to avoid the unimaginable consequences of war.

Historia
Racism and discrimination have choked economic opportunity for African Americans at nearly every turn. At several historic moments, the trajectory of racial inequality could have been altered dramatically. Perhaps no moment was more opportune than the early days of Reconstruction, when the US government temporarily implemented a major redistribution of land from former slaveholders to the newly emancipated enslaved.

An excellent history and justification for reparations
Revisado: 06-10-21
This book, more than any other I’ve read, provides the specific historical, legal and economical justification for reparations to black Americans for slavery, Jim Crow and the long history of policy which has maintained the wealth gap between blacks and whites.
I was particularly appalled by the many missed opportunities during the brief period of reconstruction to create a society based on equality. The infamous role of Andrew Johnson after Lincoln was assassinated and message to the south that there will be no repercussions for insurrection or perpetuation of oppression against black people was as disturbing as the financial and political restitution to confederates for their “losses”.
The parallels of contemporary white supremacy, black voter suppression and persistent racism in the U.S. are a compelling appeal to Connie l continue the slow but necessary march towards reparations and closure of the wealth gap in America. We will all benefit from equality.

Historia
In her 40s, with two children, a spouse, a dog, a mortgage, and a full-time job as a tenured law professor at Georgetown University, Rosa Brooks decided to become a cop. A liberal academic and journalist with an enduring interest in law's troubled relationship with violence, Brooks wanted the kind of insider experience that would help her understand how police officers make sense of their world — and whether that world can be changed.

An interesting perspective
Revisado: 05-03-21
This is part memoir, part reflection on the challenges of policing and being a police officer generally and specifically related to the Washington DC metropolitan police.
Mostly anecdotal, with a few stats and nods to institutionalized racism. If it inspires reconceptualization of training and police behavior, I guess it’s worth the read.

Revisado: 04-14-21
Despite having lived through this era of American history, President Obama creates a riveting narrative of the extraordinary events that are still impacting our daily lives.
Part historical document, part presidential and part personal, President Obama creates context for every national and intentional experience of his presidency from the housing crisis and the Wall Street bailout to the Arab spring and everything in between.
Listening to his voice, it is easy to remember these events and believe in his sincerity a black man, a loving husband, a dedicated father and a model of what it means to be presidential.

Simon Winchester is unsurpassed in his attention to detail, eloquence and story telling. I’m grateful he chooses to read the audio book for those of us who appreciate the inflection and humility with which he narrates.
Land is much like his other comprehensively researched topics, giving us a multitude of perspectives from which to contemplate the subject.

From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

Only Ms. Wilkerson’s subsequent book, Caste, compares to this incredible but often overlooked story of our American history. Told with depth through the eyes of 1200 individuals, the narrative is at once a work of breathtaking clarity and personal perseverance in the face of profound injustice.
