“Mine” is one of the first words babies learn, and by the time we grow up, the idea of ownership seems natural, whether we are buying a cup of coffee or a house. But who controls the space behind your airplane seat: you, reclining, or the squished laptop user behind you? Why is plagiarism wrong, but it’s okay to knock off a recipe or a dress design? And after a snowstorm, why does a chair in the street hold your parking space in Chicago, while in New York you lose both the space and the chair?

Such an interesting book. The authors take a look at often conflicting 'rules' about ownership (e.g. first come first served, possession, product of labor, etc) and discuss how these ideas have shaped our world. I flew through this book.

Historia
Blythe Connor is determined that she will be the warm, comforting mother to her new baby Violet that she herself never had. But in the thick of motherhood's exhausting early days, Blythe becomes convinced that something is wrong with her daughter - she doesn't behave like most children do. Or is it all in Blythe's head? Her husband, Fox, says she's imagining things. The more Fox dismisses her fears, the more Blythe begins to question her own sanity, and the more we begin to question what Blythe is telling us about her life as well.

Page After Page of Misery
Revisado: 01-23-22
I wanted to give the book one star overall, but to be fair it is objectively well-written, suspenseful, and had one or two good parts. The issue is that thrillers are not my favorite genre (reading for a book club) and I hated just about every single character in the book. I wanted to scream at Blythe most of the time, and I wanted to hit Fox on multiple occasions. (I can handle hating one character in a book, but there is no relief when you hate all of them.) I expected the ending. There are little if any happy parts in the book that I can remember, and honestly, even in a book like this, you need the balance. The book wasn't a thriller for me, but one page of misery after another. I could not wait to finish it and move on with my life. (I have trouble putting a book down once I start it.) I guess the book does raise some interesting questions, but I just loathed the characters too much to care.

Historia
In this original and penetrating audiobook, Lewis R. Gordon, one of the leading scholars of Black existentialism and anti-Blackness, takes the listener on a journey through the historical development of racialized Blackness, the problems this kind of consciousness produces, and the many creative responses from Black and non-Black communities in contemporary struggles for dignity and freedom. Skillfully navigating a difficult and traumatic terrain, Gordon cuts through the mist of White narcissism and the versions of consciousness it perpetuates.

The book is a great overview of misogyny throughout history and cultures. The author does a great job analyzing its pervasiveness, but also the myriad ways in which we ignore misogyny as a prejudice.

In the era of Grindr and same-sex marriage, gay bars are closing down at an alarming rate. What, then, was the gay bar? Set between Los Angeles, San Francisco, and London, Gay Bar takes us on a time-traveling, transatlantic bar hop through pulsing nightclubs, after-work dives, hardcore leather bars, gay cafes, and saunas, asking what these places meant to their original clientele, what they meant to the author as a younger man, and what they mean now.

Part memoir, part sociological study, all good
Revisado: 08-28-21
I enjoyed the book overall. I like both memoir and social science nonfiction, and this was both. The performance was good as well. I disagreed with one of the author's statements at one point, but this is a solid book, good story, good research, and important topic.

Half good stories, half non-stories, few funny
Revisado: 07-28-21
I really wanted to like this book, but I was incredibly disappointed. About half the stories in the book were genuinely good, but few were actually funny. I LOLed maybe twice and smiled a few other times. Part of the issue, I think, is that the reader did not have a voice that invited humor. She read way too seriously for my liking.
The other half of the stories were not really stories. Stories have a beginning, a middle, and an end, and these did not. Many times I didn't realize the book had moved on to another story because there was no real end/closure to the previous one. This is an obvious hazard of flash fiction like this, and it didn't do the stories or the book justice. If you're inclined to check out this book, get the hard copy and read it yourself.

From cork taint, to volatile acidity, to off-putting aromas and flavors, all wine connoisseurs have encountered unappealing qualities in a disappointing bottle. But are all faults truly bad? Are some even desirable? Jamie Goode brings his authoritative voice to the table once again to demystify the science behind what causes a good bottle to go bad. By exposing the root causes of faults in wine, Flawless challenges us to rethink our assumptions about how wine should taste and how we can understand beauty in a glass.

Historia
Can a well-programmed machine do anything a human can - only better? Complex algorithms are buying our groceries, picking our partners, and driving our investments. They can navigate more data than a doctor or lawyer and act with greater precision. For many years we've taken solace in the notion that they can't create. But now that algorithms can learn and adapt, does the future of creativity belong to machines too?

Revisado: 06-12-21
I got the book free from Audible just to have something on deck for between credits. It sounded decent, but I wasn't expecting much. The book turned out to be fascinating. It wasn't overly math-heavy for having been written by a mathematician, and I learned a lot. Great exploration of algorithms and the philosophical questions are AI and their potential for creativity.

Historia
At just 21, the age when most people are starting to drink (well, legally at least), Victoria James became the country’s youngest sommelier at a Michelin-starred restaurant. Even as Victoria was selling bottles worth hundreds and thousands of dollars during the day, passing sommelier certification exams with flying colors, and receiving distinction from all kinds of press, there were still groping patrons, bosses who abused their role and status, and a trip to the hospital emergency room.

Good book, bad reading
Revisado: 05-31-21
After the prologue, the book goes back to James's childhood (which is horrific), so it takes a while to get back to her career in wine. I understand the need to backtrack this far, but the title and subtitle of the book suggest that the book involves more about wine than it actually does. The book was good overall, but I had been expecting something else.
I usually like it when the author reads their own book, and I hate being really critical, but James is a really bad reader. She pauses in odd places and seems to ignore punctuation. There were countless times that I had to re-interpret what she was saying because I thought she had finished her thought only to have her go on. Another review I read said the same thing, so I'm not sure if I just noticed it more because of that. I tried to ignore it, but it was sometimes distracting.
