Historia
Call it "Zen and the Art of Farming" or a "Little Green Book", Masanobu Fukuoka's manifesto about farming, eating, and the limits of human knowledge presents a radical challenge to the global systems we rely on for our food. At the same time, it is a spiritual memoir of a man whose innovative system of cultivating the earth reflects a deep faith in the wholeness and balance of the natural world. As Wendell Berry writes in his preface, the book "is valuable to us because it is at once practical and philosophical."

Love Plants and the Earth? Read This
Revisado: 10-31-19
This is my number one most highly recommended book. As a horticulturist I probably find myself referencing or talking about this book almost every single day. Masanobu Fukuoka has a deep knowledge grown through years of determined and gracious struggle. His efforts have born knowledge that is deeply important to continue to teach to every generation. It is a simplistic, natural, high effort, high reward type of stewardship of our lands that may come off as common sense but through reading this book you will realize there is nothing common about it.

Historia
Matsutake is the most valuable mushroom in the world - and a weed that grows in human-disturbed forests across the northern hemisphere. Through its ability to nurture trees, matsutake helps forests to grow in daunting places. It is also an edible delicacy in Japan, where it sometimes commands astronomical prices. In all its contradictions, matsutake offers insights into areas far beyond just mushrooms and addresses a crucial question: what manages to live in the ruins we have made?

Great read for economists and naturalists alike
Revisado: 10-31-19
This has become one of my most highly recommended books to the point I convinced my brother in law whom is a literary professor at CU Boulder to add it to one of his courses. Fungi is a connector and Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing uses this wondrous mushroom to connect vastly different worlds and economies by following the lines in the soil. Read this book and share it.

They destroy plant diseases. They break down toxins. They plough the earth. They transform forests. They’ve survived two mass extinctions, including the one that wiped out the dinosaur. Not bad for a creature that’s deaf, blind, and spineless. Who knew that earthworms were one of our planet’s most important caretakers? Or that Charles Darwin devoted his last years to studying their remarkable achievements?

I have maintained a large scale vermicompost bin for the past few years and reading this book gave me some great insights into the lives of the wriggly friends. It left me feeling appreciative of my soil building co-workers and even more determined to spread the the good word of the remarkable worm. Highly recommend.

This book opens your mind and melts your heart
Revisado: 01-27-18
Giving the scientific method an indigenous framework seems to make for a complete process. This book brought me tears, the calm of understanding and the joy of knowing many others feel a connection with Mother Earth. Robin Kimmerer's unique set of applied knowledge and science acumen is quite rare but increasingly important in today's world. Reading this reminded me that science is beautiful and so is the world we live in, if we choose to connect with it.

Great mixture of research and story telling
Revisado: 11-27-17
Do you believe yourself to be a rational and objective decision maker? If you trust your own judgement then you are in desperate need of this book. Dan Ariely gives his take on how if human beings are predictable at all, it is in the irrational way in which we remember, compare, contrast and decide. His research itself is probably entertaining enough to be a book but the conclusions he draws make real world application seamless. Great read.

Historia
In her wise and elegant new audiobook, Jane Goodall blends her experience in nature with her enthusiasm for botany to give listeners a deeper understanding of the world around us. Long before her work with chimpanzees, Goodall's passion for the natural world sprouted in the backyard of her childhood home in England, where she climbed her beech tree and made elderberry wine with her grandmother. The garden her family began then, she continues to enjoy today. Seeds of Hope takes us from England to Goodall's home-away-from-home in Africa.

Thoreau's classic account of the solitary life, describing his attempts to simplify his life and sort out his priorities by living alone in a cabin beside Walden Pond for nearly two years, is one of the most influential books ever written. The bible of the environmental movement, Walden vividly portrays Thoreau's reverence for nature, and his understanding of the idea that nature is made up of crucially interrelated parts.
