Historia
The history of wives is largely one of silence, resilience, and forbearance. Toss in celebrity, male privilege, ruthless ambition, narcissism, misogyny, infidelity, alcoholism, and a mood disorder or two, and it's easy to understand why the marriages of so many famous writers have been stormy, short-lived, and mutually destructive. "It's been my experience," as the critic and novelist Elizabeth Hardwick once wrote, "that nobody holds a man's brutality to his wife against him." Literary wives are a unique breed, requiring a particular kind of fortitude.

Historia
The tragic fate of the British airship R101—which went down in a spectacular fireball in 1930, killing more people than died in the Hindenburg disaster seven years later—has been largely forgotten. In His Majesty’s Airship, S.C. Gwynne resurrects it in vivid detail, telling the epic story of great ambition gone terribly wrong.

…and for anyone attuned to all things British, the book perfectly captures the very British character of the major players in this story. Just a wonderful book and wonderful to listen to. Very sorry to reach the end.

Historia
This is Kazuo Ishiguro's profoundly compelling portrait of a butler named Stevens. Stevens, at the end of three decades of service at Darlington Hall, spending a day on a country drive, embarks as well on a journey through the past in an effort to reassure himself that he has served humanity by serving the "great gentleman," Lord Darlington. But lurking in his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord Darlington's "greatness," and much graver doubts about the nature of his own life.

Historia
This audiobook examines some of the ways in which, beginning very early in their interactions with European-Americans, the Cherokee began to adopt white culture and make it their own. They modeled much of their way of life on the way of life of their white neighbors, so much so that many of them sided with the Confederacy during the Civil War.

Revisado: 03-29-19
If you are interested in the Cherokees after the Trail of Tears, this will be of interest to you. Lots of information in a concise manner. Also the history of slavery by the Cherokee is three dimensional in its complex evolution from before European contact and after. I wish Audible would carry more history books on the Cherokee

Historia
The Fifties is a sweeping social, political, economic, and cultural history of the 10 years that Halberstam regards as seminal in determining what our nation is today. Halberstam offers portraits of not only the titans of the age: Eisenhower, Dulles, Oppenheimer, MacArthur, Hoover, and Nixon; but also of Harley Earl, who put fins on cars; Dick and Mac McDonald and Ray Kroc, who mass-produced the American hamburger; Kemmons Wilson, who placed his Holiday Inns along the nation's roadsides; and more.

Interesting glimpse into Sioux oral tradition
Revisado: 10-25-18
Having read Charles Eastman's "Indian Boyhood,:" From the Deep Woods to Civilization," and "The Soul of an Indian" I'm hooked on this author. He was born and raised in the traditional Sioux way, never having seen a white man until he was 15, then went on to learn English, go to several colleges including Dartmouth and Boston Medical School, then returned to his people to help care for them. By this time, they had been placed on the Pine Ridge reservation, and his witness of the Battle of Wounded Knee was one of the primary sources for "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee"

Historia
Why is it that so many efforts by liberals to lift the Black underclass not only fail, but often harm the intended beneficiaries? In Please Stop Helping Us, Jason L. Riley examines how well-intentioned welfare programs are in fact holding Black Americans back. Minimum-wage laws may lift earnings for people who are already employed, but they price a disproportionate number of Blacks out of the labor force. Affirmative action in higher education is intended to address past discrimination, but the result is fewer Black college graduates than would otherwise exist.

This book clearly explains what has gone wrong...
Revisado: 03-20-16
I live in a white minority city. I also work in a high rise and our office is next door to an employment agency. I have often ridden in the elevator with young black men who are riding up or down headed to or from the agency. Nearly always they are dressed in pants around the crotch, giant t-shirts and hooded jackets. When I attempt small talk with them, their eyes rarely lift from the floor and I can barely understand their mumbled responses. They are teenagers with their entire lives ahead of them and are almost certainly already lost for good - and I suspect many of them will soon be fathers. On the other hand, my trainer at my gym for the past 7 years is black. He is from a divorced but loving, close knit family (like the author's), he is married with children and, while we come from very different worlds, it is clear that our core beliefs as to what constitutes a successful and happy life for ourselves and our families are the same. This book goes a long way to explain the difference between the teenagers in the elevator and my trainer.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Something of a Treasure!
Revisado: 05-25-14
I rarely listen to fiction and I never listen to science fiction. I got this book because of a review in the Wall Street Journal. I was captivated from page one and had tears rolling down my cheeks twice before the end. I LOVED this book! Now and again I'd get lost in some technical details but it didn't matter, I just listened on through, eventually it would all make sense. Do yourself a favor and Google how this book came to be published. That in itself is another wonderful story!
