I don’t have a science background, or the time to write one of those long drawn out reviews that so many others have written. I don’t have a science background, and yet, I love this book, I read all of it. I appreciate the science, even though I don’t understand it. And I felt the same way about the Martian. Weir tells a great story, and the science part of it - the incredible detail - does not get in the way for me. Really incredible. He’s a genius in the sense that he can take the literary side, and combine it with the science side, and create such a compelling story.

So far I’ve only read two books in this really long series, the first and the last! I’ve decided to go back and read in order. This book was OK, it wasn’t terrible. The plot and overall narrative was “ok”.

Overall I thought the story was good throughout, lovely detailed narrative, that didn’t get boring, suspense, individual character development, but I absolutely hated the abrupt ending. I felt cheated, I felt like the author had just gotten tired of writing. And I guess upon reflection, I found the beginning to be a tedious, with too much detailed narrative about Mrs. Hopper, that wasn’t essential to the story. Setting up the story was important, but a bit over done.

It wasn’t totally bad, but it felt like there was a lot of tedium in this one… times where I felt really bored with the story. But I’m still moving onto the fifth one, because I definitely want to know what happens next!

I’ve enjoyed every Ken Follett book I’ve ever read, he is a genius of a writer. A Column of Fire was no exception.

A.J. Finn is a master story teller. The characters, setting and tempo of the story are woven together perfectly.

Heart breaking, disturbing and extraordinary... that sums it up. Not for everyone, that’s for sure.

This is one of the best books I’ve read in many years. There’s nothing more I can add to all the summaries that are already out there about it. Kristin Hannah is so very gifted, and in reading this book, I was transported to another world. My only wish was that she would have kept writing, taking the story further... only because I didn’t want it to end.

There’s just too much I could say about this book... about the entire trilogy. The author is a genius, I can’t imagine trying to write something of this magnitude. Not everyone can read books of this length, cram packed with so much detail. But I found it to be extraordinary. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves history and truly great writing.

So many ways to look at the story

I had no idea the details of the story, so it was interesting to read about all of it. Some parts, especially the scientific parts could become tedious at times, but a lot of it was really fascinating too. The social, cultural, and political .... it would be impossible to isolate any of that from such a phenomenon in our history, and still get the accurate accounting of the real story. I found the rivalry between Salk and Sabin to be especially interesting, and also to learn that polio survivors were very instrumental in getting the passage of the ADA. Although I strongly recommend the book, I know a lot of people personally who wouldn’t be able / interested to get through so much statistical detail,
