The personal experiences of Lisa and Melissa paired with their knowledge create trust between their voices and the listener. They had my attention early in the book when they said, "We know that the gap between your expectations and reality can cause feelings of shame, fear or resentment." This book gives the experiences of many adoptive parents a name - blocked care - and helps us to feel less alone while reclaiming compassion (or understanding) for ourselves and our children.

This is a book I wish I would have had when my daughters were younger. It is also a book I wish my parents would have had in the years after they adopted me. Dr. Purvis and Lisa Qualls are a gifted team and their balance of brain science with practical advice makes this a valuable resource to refer to over and over again.
