Historia
It's the 21st century, and although we tried to rear unisex children - boys who play with dolls and girls who like trucks - we failed. Even though the glass ceiling is cracked, most women stay comfortably beneath it. And everywhere we hear about vitally important "hardwired" differences between male and female brains. The neuroscience that we read about in magazines, newspaper articles, books, and even scientific journals increasingly tells a tale of two brains, and the result is a validation of the status quo.

Great information, good narration
Revisado: 01-17-22
Great information, good narration, but not quite a 5 star book. The best parts are where the author debunks poorly designed neuroscience studies.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

Interesting true crime narrative
Revisado: 05-25-20
Glad it was the length of a short story; any more and it would have been hard to finish. The narrative is not unbiased, and while the audience is allowed a small measure of compassion for the murderer (given the circumstances of his adolescence), we are provided with the backstory to follow the evidence and conclude with the guilty verdict. The story spent too much time on the murder investigation and not enough on the native lore; if the author was searching for a balance between the two, he missed that mark.

Historia
A debut novel already praised as "unbearably poignant and beautifully told" (Eimear McBride), this captivating story follows - over the course of four seasons - a misfit man who adopts a misfit dog. It is springtime, and two outcasts - a man ignored, even shunned by his village, and the one-eyed dog he takes into his quiet, tightly shuttered life - find each other, by accident or fate, and forge an unlikely connection. As their friendship grows, their small seaside town suddenly takes note of them.

Caution: dark plot twists ahead
Revisado: 10-23-19
The story of a man and his dog traveling by car in the midst of a midlife crisis would be, should be, highly entertaining. However, that is not the tale here, or at least only marginally the one crafted loosely on this premise. Since I do not appreciate plot spoilers in book reviews, I will not offer any here other than to say that when the book ended, I was both relieved and unfulfilled. The conclusion was neither happy or sad, the main conflict remains seemingly unresolved, and it is difficult to close the cover and shelve it without feeling like it deserves its own therapy session. The story would have been improved if the author had interjected periods told through the consciousness of the dog, One Eyed Jack, but perhaps it is for the best that the reader remains relatively unattached to him.

Historia
Call Me by Your Name first swept across the world in 2007. It is the story of a sudden and powerful romance that blossoms between an adolescent boy and a summer guest at his parents' cliffside mansion on the Italian Riviera. During the restless summer weeks, unrelenting but buried currents of obsession, fascination, and desire intensify their passion as they test the charged ground between them and verge toward the one thing both already fear they may never truly find again: total intimacy.

NC17, gay coming of age with mature themes
Revisado: 07-18-19
The story is well developed, and it is well read by the narrator, but many times this reads like a soft porn and it would not be recommended to listen outloud, in public, or with an audience. For example, if you were given a dollar for every time the word "cock" was used/said, you'd have at least a few Benjamins in your pocket.

Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

The story of a man searching for his father...
Revisado: 06-26-19
The author searches for his father, or at least the memory and legacy of his father, through the quest to find and bring his father's WWII comrade home for burial. Poignant and emotional, prepare to digest it a couple chapters at a time.

The narration by a whole cast is refreshing, the plot is commendable with some dark twists, but nothing gory or psychologically horrific.

Mystery mind-fluff with a disturbing twist
Revisado: 06-06-19
A decent juvenile mystery with a plot twist worthy of Nancy Drew if ND grew up to be a Dateline NBC tv journalist. I wonder if the author really wanted to discuss modern teenage angst through the lenses of technology and entitlement, or if I am apportioning more thought into what is intended to be young adult fiction.

Loved it - never a dull moment - the narration was incredible, capturing exactly how I thought Marianne herself would sound.
Poignant, timely retrospective of what it means to be a resister of racism, oppression and tyranny, told through a vivid narrative that captures the intertwining spaces of gender, nationality, and class at a time when those realities were at once incredibly defined and significantly in flux.

The best of the 70s and 80s Geekdom....
Revisado: 01-31-18
One of the most compelling reads I've had for some time, and I do not enjoy /do not read dystopian fiction. The guilty pleasure of this book is wondering what tidbit of childhood memory will be called upon next to play a role in the quest, and how the characters interact with these memories, which are not their own. The author goes down a rabbit hole of gamers lingo and subculture a couple of times, but to his credit pulls out before the reader tosses the book aside. If you can stick with it, this is a fantastic blend of nostalgia, sci-fi, and fast paced suspense thriller; think Stranger Things AV club meets Robert Langdon in the Matrix.
