The cliches!
Revisado: 10-26-23
Despite some interesting world building, this series is pretty forgettable. The dialogue is forced, cliched, stiff and repetitive. The narration only reinforces the whiny YA simplicity. The intimate scenes feel like they were written by sophomores passing notes in class. The climactic battle is broken by so many unbelievable pauses for dialogue and wold view explications that it has all the momentum of a seizing transmission.

And it's up to him to figure out why and how. And how to stop it all from happening again.

A perfect story
Revisado: 11-28-22
Alastair Reynolds is an amazing author. I’ve read many of his other stand alone novels and all of the Revelation Space series. While his stories are imaginative and entertaining, Reynolds doesn’t always stick the landing. The endings often feel rushed or disconnected, but not this one. This one is perfect.

Historia
The planet is called Banshee. The air is unbreathable, the water poisonous. It is the home of the most implacable enemies that humanity, in all its interstellar expansion, has ever encountered. Felix is a scout in A-team Two. Highly competent, he is the sole survivor of mission after mission. Yet he is a man consumed by fear and hatred.

Excellent
Revisado: 10-05-19
The narration is spot on. The characters are damaged, complex, and human. While the plot relies on some familiar tropes, they are executed flawlessly and I dreaded reaching the end of the book.

Historia
Belisarius is a quantum man, an engineered Homo quantus who fled the powerful insight of dangerously addictive quantum senses. He found a precarious balance as a con man, but when a client offers him untold wealth to move a squadron of warships across an enemy wormhole, he must embrace his birthright to even try. In fact, the job is so big that he'll need a crew built from all the new sub-branches of humanity. If he succeeds, he might trigger an interstellar war, but success might also point the way to the next step of Homo quantus evolution.

Historia
"There is fear and hatred in your eyes. To you I am a monster, a skulker in the shadows, a fiend to scare your children with. A creature to be hunted down and slaughtered llike a beast in the fields. It is time you pay heed to the beast. And see the beast in yourself. I have your fear. But I have earned your respect. Hear my story. Feel the flow of blood and be thankful. Thankful that it was me, not you, who bore the sword. Thankful to the Orcs: born to fight, destined to win peace for all."

Historia
In a world scarred by an apocalyptic past, evoking a time both 2,000 years past and 2,000 years into the future, untold thousands gather for a crusade. Among them, two men and two women are ensnared by a mysterious traveler, Anasûrimbor Kellhus - part warrior, part philosopher, part sorcerous, charismatic presence - from lands long thought dead. The Darkness That Comes Before is a history of this great holy war, and like all histories, the survivors write its conclusion.

Abandoning at Chapter 5
Revisado: 02-20-19
I rarely abandon a book, but I'm done here. Although I had high hopes for the series, the story is unengaging, the characters indistinguishable, and the narration monotonous. The author came recommend based on authors I have enjoyed, Joe Abercrombie and GRRM, but DeVries isn't in their league. It felt like listening to a high school fiction project that was heavy on world building, chock full of nonsensical made up names, but devoid of emotional resonance or humor.

Historia
Sancia Grado is a thief, and a damn good one. And her latest target, a heavily guarded warehouse on Tevanne’s docks, is nothing her unique abilities can’t handle. But unbeknownst to her, Sancia’s been sent to steal an artifact of unimaginable power, an object that could revolutionize the magical technology known as scriving. The Merchant Houses who control this magic - the art of using coded commands to imbue everyday objects with sentience - have already used it to transform Tevanne into a vast, remorseless capitalist machine.

Robert Jackson Bennett builds an interesting world
Revisado: 11-23-18
While not as compelling as Bennett's other novels, Foundryside delivers an interesting world. The characters are a little wooden, but it is still a worthwhile setup for future stories.

He's headed to the top floor, on a mission to meet the goddess.

Forgivably mediocre
Revisado: 09-21-17
There wasn’t anything structurally wrong with the story. The characters behaved somewhat predictably. The narrator carried the reading off well, there just wasn’t much to savor. I’d recommend Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn instead.

Over rated
Revisado: 08-16-17
This book opens and closes with relatively dramatic sequences, but fills the intervening chapters with flat characters, hours of exposition, and irrelevant foreshadowing. Some foreshadowed events may occur in the next book in the series. I'll never know.
