Excellent Characters
Revisado: 01-20-25
I really liked all the characters, including the dog! The trial itself was a little weak from the standpoint of evidence and witnesses considering it was a wrongful death suit. I could think of a number of ways to get a better case presented and I am not an attorney. However, the excellent characters (and fine narration) made this book a very enjoyable listen. It's hard to keep up with Michael Connelly or Michael Stagg but Robert Bailey has a good one here and I will definitely be listening to more in this series!

Historia
Criminal Defense Attorney Mitch Turner is awoken in the middle of the night by a message from his nerdy law school employee Timothy Cooper begging Mitch for help. Uncertain about the problem from Timothy's cryptic texts, Mitch Turner slips into his suit and heads over to visit Timothy, unable to imagine any reason why Timothy would be calling for help at such a late hour. Mitch arrives to find the police at Timothy's apartment and learns that Timothy's roommate was murdered.

Passably Entertaining
Revisado: 01-20-25
This was an OK book and I'm glad I listened to it but...
The attorney Mitch Turner is often annoying. Like when he initially says his ex-girlfriend, the lead detective investigator on his case, knows she regrets her decision to dump him back in law school as he is at the same time being a total jerk to her. He is super careful not to pick up one piece of evidence he finds on the floor but finds another more important piece of evidence and grabs it with his bare hand. And why did none of the detectives check the suspect for gun residue? That is the first thing they would have done but they conveniently skipped over it.
That being said, this is a good listen, try it out for something fun. I may check out book 2.

Historia
Sam Johnstone was hoping for renewal when he took a job at a boutique law firm in rustic Wyoming. The mountains and streams of the West would be a refreshing, quiet place to start over after years of war and turmoil in his personal life. But after a local woman is brutally murdered, Sam realizes that things aren’t so quiet in this rural American town. The accused is one Tommy Olsen, a known delinquent who had been sleeping with the victim. Sam is repulsed by the crime and wants nothing to do with the case but meets with Tommy to make sure he has legal representation.

Excruciating - Don't Judge a Book By It's Cover
Revisado: 01-20-25
The book is marketed as "A Sam Johnstone Legal Thriller". He is barely in the first third of the book and when he is he is getting fired from his firm in Washington, DC and spending all his money drinking, while occasionally fishing and drinking.
Most of the 1st third of the narrative is just short scenes of cases judges are reviewing that seem like the author is just trying to write quirky cases involving a variety of characters who are in court due to intoxication and drugs but who play no part in the rest of the books plot. This is Wyoming, why not mix in some hunting cases? And this goes on and on and I was left wondering, where is Sam Johnstone?. Then after the crime is finally committed the author spends page after page at multiple times playing the will he or won’t he take the case. Since it’s a “Sam Johnstone Legal Thriller” there is no suspense. Of course he’s going to take the case. The debate could have been one strong scene with one character. Repeating the debate multiple times with different characters was annoying, not intriguing. Then he keeps going back and forth back and forth with the client as to is he guilty or not. He supposedly believes his client is innocent and he takes the case but promptly recommends his client take a plea deal despite the clients proclaiming innocence and desire to go to trial. If you believe him, believe him and move on, stop trying to convince him to plead out. It’s annoying, not suspenseful.
Then they go to trial and Johnstone is the worst lawyer ever. He is constantly the drinking the night before, coming in hung over once after a bad day of court the previous day, and he hardly cross examines anyone effectively and brings in almost no witnesses.
To me a better protagonist of the story would have been the sheriff investigator Polson who keeps investigating the case for new leads even after the arrest of suspect Tommy Olson who is charged by the overzealous prosecutor. That would have been a much better direction. The investigator watching the fiasco of the biased judge, over-zealous prosecutor, alcoholic defense attorney and innocent client. Polson could have been nose to the grindstone following leads and solving it just before a verdict.
I had to listen to this at 1.10 speed to make it to the end.

Why is Miami… Miami? What does the heartbreaking fate of the cheetah tell us about the way we raise our children? Why do Ivy League schools care so much about sports? What is the Magic Third, and what does it mean for racial harmony? In this provocative new work, Malcolm Gladwell returns to the subject of social epidemics and tipping points, this time with the aim of explaining the dark side of contagious phenomena. Through a series of gripping stories, Gladwell traces the rise of a new and troubling form of social engineering

Thought provoking examples and research. Best two sections were on COVID and the Oxy crisis. Really explained a lot about the world we are living in as a society and the way we make decisions.

Really glad to see past series characters return in a meaningful way for the plot. Great resolution of the case. Really good ending and consistent with the personality of each character. The narration is so good I have to remind myself that Nate is a character. I was really looking forward to this book coming out and it exceeded my expectations.

Another story where Joe Pickett solves the crime - but only after it’s too late to make a difference to the victims. Plus this is a continuation of Joe Picketts move to condone vigilantism. It’s kind of a sad transition but since most do get what they deserve it’s still a satisfying book!!

Historia
Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous–and most revered–doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.

I really gained an appreciation for the unseen positive impact Dr Fauci had on my life. Becoming aware of him in 2020 I missed an incredible career and the role he played for decades in making our country and the world safer from infectious disease. He deserves far better than the treatment he has received in these recent years. Thank you Dr. Fauci. That the book is well written and narrated this is a home run!!

Historia
Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld, had a passion project he’d been pursuing for years, ahead of his untimely passing in 2008. Knowing how special it was, his wife, Sherri Crichton, held back his notes and the partial manuscript until she found the right author to complete it: James Patterson, the world’s most popular storyteller.

Letdown After Being Taken in by the Concept
Revisado: 06-27-24
Let me start with the narrator, I love Scott Brick narration of the Lee Child Reacher novels, but he was not the right choice for a book taking place in Hawaii. He did fine with the pronunciation as far as I could tell but his melodramatic delivery just didn't meld with the Hawaiian culture.
The stakes of the story just didn't ring true either. Save the World is just too big a job. It should have been save the Hawaiian islands to make it more realistic.
But then again, nothing was realistic. What makes Crichton so great to read is the science he weaved in to make his stories believable. I swore off James Patterson after two tries of his past novels as his plots and characters are ludicrous. However, in an interview I read with Patterson he claimed he wanted to honor that science approach and he claimed he had done research to weave it into the story consistent with how Crichton would.
Nope. Ludicrous. I really enjoyed the first third of the book, the main characters and the plot. But then I became progressively more annoyed as it went on. Interesting characters were left undeveloped and randomly inserted back in.
When the lava finally flows it is described over and over as flowing 50 miles per hour but the timeline that is presented would have it flowing 400 miles not the actual 50 or so miles to the shore. Patterson needed to slow down the lava or compress the timeframe. And the delicate "secret held for decades by the US Military" is described as fragile yet earthquake after gathering intensity earthquake have such limited effect it takes away from the story.
And then the ending and wrap-up was a huge letdown. To share why would be too big a spoiler. I liked the idea of this book so much more than the final result.

Great Writing - Great Plot - Great Narration
Revisado: 02-23-24
Michael Stagg (and narrator George Newbern) are exceptional at creating a bond between the character and the listener. Stagg’s characters, including opposing counsel and witnesses are never villainized as all bad, or all good. It is refreshingly positive. The twists are realistic and the courtroom dialogue makes good points on behalf of both the defense and the prosecutors and witnesses he is facing. Character Nate Shepherd is a good guy, with good friends, good family, and he is an honest and ethical brilliant lawyer. Each book references back to previous cases and characters enough that there is some continuity. It’s kind of like each book is a section of a larger book so by the end of this book 4 I have listened to a 45 hour book and walked 200 miles with the time flying by. I am glad to see I have many more hours and miles to enjoy more Nate Shepherd cases.
