Neither insightful nor helpful
Revisado: 06-03-25
Useless advice. Whole book simply says “suck it up!” A whole chapter on “stop whining.” Every chapter talks about crying (literally). This is the most ridiculous book I’ve ever come across.

Historia
My husband and I are fighting for our lives in hospital after a terrible car accident. But despite my pain, all I can think about is what our families will find behind our front door. The scarf that has been all over the news, belonging to a dead young woman with honey-coloured hair. I have to speak to the police before my husband can. I’m drifting in and out of consciousness, but when I hear my wife talking to the police, accusing me of the murder of an innocent woman, a cold fear grips me. I know I’ve got a temper.

Maybe the worst plot ever
Revisado: 01-29-24
This is likely the worst book I’ve ever listened to. The plot completely falls apart. Characters team up for no reason. The main character is horrible but depicted as honorable. Despicable characters suddenly turn nice. It’s like the author wove a web then couldn’t untangle it. Only redeeming quality is a good narrator. Was this book written by AI???

Abysmal
Revisado: 10-02-22
None of the characters have any resemblance to their origins. One quote tells all about the series, where Watson calls Mycroft a “fat bastard.” This typifies the writer’s portrayal of the characters. It’s as if he assigned each of them their polar opposite personalities….pure trash!

Very Good! Fits in Well w/ Sherlock Holmes Canon
Revisado: 07-04-22
Enjoyable, easy listen. Keeps you engaged, interesting throughout. Good characters, good story.
Much of the story is "narrated" by an unseen character, which I normally don't enjoy, but it works well in this instance.
Author does a very good job of helping the listener/reader picture the scenes, You can easily visualize Victorian London for those at the low end of society.

Sharp Divergence from Beekeeper, Not in a Good Way
Revisado: 07-04-22
Suffered through listening to this book. Way too much religion-related talk. Maybe should have seen this coming during the irrelevant religion-related chapters in The Beekeeper's Apprentice. But, this book takes the minor detour from Beekeepers and makes it the primary theme of this book.
It's like the author used the cachet and brand recognition of Sherlock Holmes to sell a totally different book.
Wish I could have both my money and time back! Too bad, because Beekeeper is pretty good.

Historia
A vivid and incisive portrait of Winston Churchill during wartime from acclaimed historian Max Hastings, Winston’s War captures the full range of Churchill’s endlessly fascinating character. At once brilliant and infuriating, self-important and courageous, Hastings’s Churchill comes brashly to life as never before. Beginning in 1940, when popular demand elevated Churchill to the role of prime minister, and concluding with the end of the war, Hastings shows us Churchill at his most intrepid and essential, when, by sheer force of will, he kept Britain from collapsing.

One of the Best WWII Books to Listen to!
Revisado: 07-04-22
I've listened to hundreds of WWII books. This is one of the best. Learned more from this book than any 20 others combined. Insights, reactions to events, all sorts of what-were-they-really-thinking information in this book. Author pulls diary entries from random people during the time to add extra flavor to the events.
It's also very fair to all 3 of the major Allied powers. Shows the underappreciated role the USSR played in WWII, the comparative impotence of Britain as the war progressed as well as their ineffectiveness in battle, and FDR's total disregard for the people of Eastern Europe that has led to 80+ years of suppression of these peoples.
Also shows both the positives and negatives of Churchill himself, I think very fairly.
Only negative is the author goes on and on about relatively insignificant moments in the war, as if he needed to give equal column inches to each month of the war. Also, it doesn't go in to battle strategies and "action" so don't expect that. It's more of an academic work than an action movie.
Overall, maybe the best book I've ever listened to about the war...certainly the one I've learned the most from.

Worst Holmes & Watson Audiobook
Revisado: 05-09-22
Listened to well over 100 Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson books on Audible. This one is without question the worst. Bad story, unlikeable characters. Watson character shallow, openly jealous of Holmes. Ends with Watson getting a “handy” in carriage by 58 year-old woman…wth?!?!

No one in 1840s New York likes fires, copper star Timothy Wilde least of all. After a blaze killed his parents and another left him with a terrible scar, he has avoided flames of all kinds. So when a seamstress turned arsonist threatens Robert Symmes, a corrupt tycoon high in the Tammany Hall ranks, Timothy isn’t thrilled that Symmes consults him. His dismay escalates when his audacious and charismatic older brother, Valentine, himself deeply politically entrenched, decides to run against the incumbent, who they suspect is guilty of assault and far darker crimes.

An Excellent Trilogy by an Excellent Author
Revisado: 06-09-21
Love Lyndsay Faye's books. This trilogy is outstanding, though this is the weakest plot. It's a very good story with well developed characters. I think I'm a bit biased against this third book in the series because they changed narrators. Story is set in NYC just before the Civil War and after the founding of the first police department in NYC. Highly recommend the first two books in the series, and then, of course you'll listen to the third and final book. Very enjoyable.

A Very Pleasant Surprise for Sherlock Fans
Revisado: 12-21-20
Entered this skeptical...a futuristic story derived from the Holmes legend...but it's an excellent listen. And it takes a minute to get used to Shvorne Marks as a narrator but she is outstanding. The story moves quickly and the Sherlock references are well placed, not overdone. The ending has a great twist. This is a story you plan to listen to for 30 minutes at a time but spend hours.
Hope Audible makes sequels to Clockwork Sherlock!
