Predictable from early on

Northwest Washington shines through the odd characterics of this tall tale. But there were great moments with the octopus. I had a hard time getting through it and had to return to it several times. Nothing believable but Van Pelt did allow for a sense of place to be strongly developed and there was no mistaking a mother's grief or a childs longing I enjoyed the narration and appreciated how they brought the characters to life. I would recommnd it to a few friends who live or have lived in WA. but I cannot widely recommend it.

Disappointing 2nd book

I was excited to see there was a 2nd book in the series however it was not up to the first book. Nothing was remotely believable . Formulaic and inconsistant narrative and confusing plot. Dialogue was terrible. The reader did their best but given was she had to work with really not fair so I am saying ok to the narration.

Too predictable but narration is good

So disappointed with the first book in the series. They plot is woefully obvious and suspense building is inadequate. But her character development for the new detective is very good and her descriptive writing of place and time remains stellar. The Narrator is great. Really terrific with all characters, his rhythm and cadence and capture are excellent. I really want this character and series to improve and I hope it does in book two.

Plot was far fetched. Liberties were taken with the facts and although she remarks on this in the epilogue. That was too late for me. The American husband is a bit too much. But the reading by Cassidy remains authentic and easy on the ear.
