The despicable people in a reprehensible story
Revisado: 03-16-25
The despicable actions of each character. It was so realistic I had to wonder about the author’s experience if she was rejecting her own aggressive writing that Verity claimed. Perhaps that just shows how effective Hoover’s writing was in this book. I still question the accidental deaths of the children. Were they really chronic? If verity could p imagine these things she certainly had the capacity to act on these feelings. Most mothers it would seem would never to be able imagine let alone write about doing away with their children unless they are sick. Verity was mental Loann was a predator. The book in general wasn’t horrible but it dealt with loathsome topics. Yes kept me hooked because I knew the author had to tie up loose ends and she did it in a very predictable tried and true way. Like great mysteries and westerns the alleged bad guy dies twice.Verity did through her writing. The way children were described throughout the book gave me chills.
I have to say I really disliked the narrators voice it was nasal and irritating. Though I think it fit the protagonist and helped me stay irritated with her and her actions. Jeremy was nondescript, a background character until he needed to step forward.

But Ray has a gift and a dream—he’s determined to become a world-class professional violinist, and nothing will stand in his way. Not his mother, who wants him to stop making such a racket; not the fact that he can’t afford a violin suitable to his talents; not even the racism inherent in the world of classical music.

A black prodigy r '.
Revisado: 02-20-25
This was an amazing and inspirational book. get an inside view of the difficulty of being a prodigy without the support of family or resources. It points out there is a need for a mentor, someone who recognizes the potential and the talent of Rayquan and is willing to take the time out to develop his talent generously and without restraint of personal ambitions. That is this story but it is written beautifully by the author who is a professional violinist. I am sure this is Mr Slocomb’s story as well as Ray. It points out how money makes people, whether it is family or opportunists , makes them see the dollar signs and not the signs of great talent. Oh yes, Ray the protagonist is a reluctant hero. He was victimized throughout the story. Sometimes his naivete maddening, then I had to remember in high school he was still a kid. Yet he grew up still having faith in others and not recognizing that everyone including his mom and family did not appreciate or cultivate his gifts. I loved this book and will read another. I am not a musician but I can understand how. Music inspired Ray to reach for the stars and the Tchaikovsky competition. I loved this book. The ending saw Ray exhibit grace to some extent but finally recognize who would push him forward I and those who would bring him down. Bravo!

Historical perspective black slave owners
Revisado: 02-04-25
The novel covered generations. Not especially engaging. It did describe circumstances of inheritance that put some slaves in ownership position. The writing was good but plot weak and scattered.

A complex story
Revisado: 02-04-25
This was like reading three novels in one. The kidnapping, the chase, the finish. There were interesting themes and some surprises. Nothing was left unexplained. Whereas it kept my interest I was more motivated just to get to the end. The ending was nondescript considering all the detail we had received before. I think the book is too highly rated. Good but not great. Character development good. Patch, Charlotte Sammy and Saint. I don’t think I will read other novels.by author.

It was an unusual setting for the trio. The usual pattern of story. Scary assassinating Supreme Court justices. Seems to reflect the times. Someone trying to shift the balance of power in the USA just fictionalized.

Swift river is not so swift.
Revisado: 11-10-24
This book was not great. Just because a book is about a black person or mixed person from years back it does not make it readable. I found it slow moving and not focused. I did not find the story of the characters particularly interesting. One theme was the father who disappeared. Another about the white mother who was mostly dysfunctional. Another about the protagonist who struggled with excess weight and low self esteem. The title and reviews intrigued me. So i did finish it, but I don’t feel that special feeling that i just read a great book.. rather. I felt more relief that i had completed it. About the last third i found some story lines mildly interesting particularly as the aunt tied the family history with the present. This of course is just my opinion but it is way over rated.

Historia
Jane has high hopes her life is about to turn around. After years of living precariously, she, her painter husband, Lenny, and their two kids have landed a stint as house sitters in a friend’s luxurious home high in the hills above Los Angeles, a gig that coincides magically with Jane’s sabbatical. If she can just finish her latest novel, Nusu Nusu, the centuries-spanning epic Lenny refers to as her “mulatto War and Peace,” she’ll have tenure and some semblance of stability and success within her grasp. But things don’t work out quite as hoped.

A very strange story
Revisado: 10-20-24
The topic of mulatto history is different. Separating their existence from the African Americans experience. Jane was strange and lied most of the book. A neglectful parent to some extent. Her marriage to Lenny was based on unusual circumstances. What I liked was the peek behind Hollywood. Stolen works manipulations. I don’t know maybe this story was like Finn from another planet.
