Firstly, come on guys... this title... "This Day all Gods Die" how bad ass is that? You know you gotta buckle up and put on your adult diapers when you read that. Look by now, many of you will have read more than a few series, and you'll know that sometimes the final installment is not always the best book in the series. This is not the case here. This is the book you have been working toward. You put in the time and this book will pay out all your wants and desires. Except maybe a date with a curvaceous redhead, you'll still have to work for that one brother. Ok ok I'll get serious. This is the strongest book in the series and it will leave nothing hanging and not leave you wanting. You want dark grit? - here you go sir. You want epic heroics? - here's a double serving on the house my good man. You want an evil bastard or two to get their come-uppings? - Try aisle six madam we are fully stocked and open 24 hours a day. My point is that Donaldson does not say, "well my characters will take the high road", no they need to get shit done. Ole Scott Brick brings every gritry feeling to life with these characters, and I promise you it is a performance that rivals any crap they have in the theaters. YOU WILL LOVE AND HATE THE CHARACTERS OF THIS BOOK AND SERIES MORE THAN ANY OTHER YOU HAVE READ. I promise yall. Angus, love him or hate him, I won't judge you, will dole out what you need. Morn has been through the shit and back; we all want to see if she ever gets any kind of happy ending. Davies, will he ever get his head on straight? Man just read the book and find out. If you make it to the end this book you will forever make want more like it. Don't worry ole UD (me) know's what you need. To conclude this is the crown jewel of Dark scifi in an amazing dark scifi series. Worth the read, but hell if you made it this far you already know that.

Remember kids if it ain't a run on sentence it ain't worth writing. Watch out for gap sickness and keep on trucking in Dark scifi.

I like to start this review as all my reviews, half drunk and with nothing to lose. I love this series, on my long drives I find that nothing keeps me awake more than dark scifi. This series is by far one of the best (perhaps 2nd best) and I've read plenty of them. Now you'll have noticed in book 3 "dark hungry god" that we are starting to see a little more of the politics that follows our love/hate triangle of heroes and villains. Ole Morn has had it pretty rough but the girl keeps on trucking. Angus ain't having much of a better go of it, but if you believe in karma you'd kind of expect it. As i said in my review of book three. You'll get more and more characters introduced, but the writing and narration will make you care for them as much as our space faring group aboard the trumpet. Personally I don't mind the "ancillary documentation" parts or the "political espionage" parts that much. They play much more of a role in book 4, but I feel it is to make the portions of Morn/Nick/Davies/Angus all the better. If you've come this far in the series you will not be disappointed. Keep on trucking guys. Run-on-Sentence man Awaaaaaaaay!!!!

Guys the brutality, grittiness and dark foreboding just keeps on a-truckin'. I make light of my reviews but one real thing I want to convey is that our boy Donaldson is a master at character depth. He just keeps introducing more and more of 'em and not an ounce of effort is spared at making them part of the story and some one you'll care about. Anyway you'll get some pretty sick twists and turns out of this one, the whole time noticing that the already stacked odds are just getting higher and higher for both the good, bad, and ugly. If you haven't noticed it by now you gotta tip your hats to our man Scott Brick. Ole Donlandson can make you love or dislike the human characters with his excellent writing, but DAMN Scott makes you HATE the Amnion characters with his top notch narration. I can guarantee, with 100% certainty that whether it is affection or loathing these will be the character you have the most feeling for in scifi.

So we continue with the merciless beat down of poor Morn. Now we find that the knight in shining armor ole Capt Nick may not be such a great guy. As the reader will come to find this author does an incredible job at making you love and hate each character. They are all the epitome of anti heroes. This is still some of the grittiest darkest scifi you can find out there, lord knows I have tried and this series will stick with you. You will read about some of the most baddest bad guys and formidable foes in scifi, don't hope for any good guys, there are none. Morn is your closest thing and she is the only one, every one else is either immoral or evil like the people who work at the IRS or Arby's (kidding Arbys has the meats!). Keep the ball rolling on the gap cycle series it is brutal and not for the faint of heart but worth listening to every minute.

Let me say this if you are looking for: Dark, Gritty, and some pretty gruesome and detailed scenes of human anguish look no further than this Book 1 of the Gap Cycle series "The Gap into Conflict". Look, I don't want to scare anyone off, may parts of this read will make you cringe and you may even feel dirty at the end, but you will not want to stop listening. You'll need to hear the whole "Real Story" so to speak. For those readers who like anti-heroes this book (but more so the series) you will run into may of them. However, these are heroes you will learn to love and also love to hate. There are no saints in this story, except maybe Morn, every character has great pros and horrible cons (again that is the theme of the whole series). Please understand this is not for the faint of heart, you are going to live through these characters lowest lows and hardest trials of their lives, but if you can't stand the heat stay on the porch and go back to something softer like Go Dog Go or Harry Potter.

Brutality revisited

So ends the epic that is Bio of a Space Tyrant (Books 1-5) as I said in other reviews of this series Book 1 Refugee is a Horror/Dark Scifi, book 2 Mercenary is a military scifi, book 3 Politician is a mystery/espionage, book 4 a political thriller and I would call this Book 5 another scifi political thriller, but with stronger science fiction leanings. (run on sentences abound here). I found the story to be a stronger book than book 4, which I found to still be great but at times difficult to endure. Hope has seen better days, but still has a few tricks up his sleeves and enough libido to power a new form of space craft into a new era of mankind. This book has a great dawning of a new era feel and is a good way to wrap up the life of a powerful character who had it pretty damn rough, which many of you know is hard to do. (see Dark Tower series, Sten series, Gap Cycle series, and Revelation space series for other hard endings.) You owe it to yourself to wrap up this series, Book five is stronger than Book4 and probably on par with book 3. And don't y'all worry your pretty heads, it still gets pretty brutal for ole Hope.

So if you've made it to the fourth book you know the characters and how great the narrator is, well some where along the lines the author decided to have our boy start making... I don't know, goofy decisions. I won't go into it, but the story is still solid with maybe a little less of the brutal-ness some readers may remember from Book 1 Refugee. This one is more of a scifi political thriller than the horror/dark scifi that is Refugee, than the military scifi that is Mercenary, and than the mystery/espionage that is the Politician (books 1,2 &3). Still many interesting stories, but I feel that this is the waning of Hope's sanity, integrity and of course brutality.

So this has an interesting start that will instantly draw you in, as if the normal feast of brutality did not bring you back to the table. Our boy Ole Hope has really stepped in it... some times literally, but of course he will be getting all the Honeys and his sister will be helping him rise to power. I think the best part of this book is how well it gets you to hate some of the antagonists. Anybody can make you like a hero, but making you loathe a character as fast as this book does to its antagonist is something special. But, come on guys you know Hope and Spirit are gonna find a way out of it. Great story, the narrator is a boss, and you will not want to stop listening.

Unlike Refugee, this book is more military sci-fi and not nearly as dark and hopeless as. Many fun battles and interesting love interests (seriously Hubris pulls). In the life of Hope Hubris this is the "fun years". The writing and stories are still as entrancing as those in Refugee, with less doom & gloom. Just like Refugee you will not want to stop listening.

This read is absolutely gut wrenching and brutal, as is most the series, however this one will stay with you as it usually concerns children. Don't look for happy endings, don't hope for hope (pun semi intended), and do not stop once you start. The author and narrator work to perfection to create feelings for the characters. You will not be able to but this down.
