Struggling in his new role, where he feels nowhere near worthy of following his predecessor, DCI Simon Fenchurch is called to a hipster brewery's basement. A dead body has been found in a pool of blood... With two pairs of shoes at the scene. Does the second pair belong to the killer? Or another victim? As the case veers off in an unexpected direction, Fenchurch comes to face-to-face with someone from his past, someone intent on causing havoc by revealing case secrets to the public. I have read the entire collection in this series except for 10 which is still downloading.
A great set of characters sympathetic but not syrupy. The plot twists are surprising but not out of left field.
My husband and I were watching a YouTube video on the English language. He says that Shakespeare had a working vocabulary of 5400 words where as things stand today the average English speaker has a working vocabulary of just 3000! Ed James has a tu

The premise of the story had potential- in an alternate universe that has alternate facts.
Didn’t even finish the third book which is the written counterpoint to a Madonna made from dung.

I have heard most of the stories in this series and they are wonderful well told books.
I have only one caveat if anachronisms bother you then you like me will talkback to the book.
I’ll mention two- no one in the seventh century told distance in metric measurements . I looked it up.
Second while Latin vulgate was the tongue of the educated it is not the lingua franc because modern French wasn’t even around yet.
Love the books hate the anachronisms - still I highly recommend them!
