Historia
Originally published in 1778, Evelina is Frances Burney's first and most beloved novel. It was a landmark in the development of the novel of manners and went on to influence such enduringly popular authors as Jane Austen. By turns hilarious and grim, witty and lyrical, the story follows young Evelina as she leaves the seclusion of her country home and enters into late eighteenth-century London society - both its pleasures and its dangers. Life in eighteenth-century England is vividly rendered as Evelina is educated in the ways of the world and, eventually, love.

I loved it!
Revisado: 12-16-24
I’m a big fan of Jane Austen and this novel was a delight to listen to! The voice actors were very engaging. I love novels like this that transport me to another time and yet we feel these relatable depictions of the human experience and relationships as well as feel some curiosity the differences.

Annie Bot was created to be the perfect girlfriend for her human owner Doug. Designed to satisfy his emotional and physical needs, she has dinner ready for him every night, wears the pert outfits he orders for her, and adjusts her libido to suit his moods. True, she’s not the greatest at keeping Doug’s place spotless, but she’s trying to please him. She’s trying hard.

Intimate, subtle and intriguing
Revisado: 12-07-24
This book definitely hooked me and I couldn’t stop listening. Narrator was great! The story was thought provoking exploring relationship dynamics, abuse, at what point does a machine become “human” I saw the reference to Frankenstein in the description which I feel is misleading. I kept waiting for things to get action packed but it has a very realistic, mundane life type of pacing. Much more focused on the internal world and characters development then high stakes plot development. Maybe there’s more story to be told in sequels. It ended on a satisfying note but with potential for a lot more to be explored in this world.

A well written story around the topic of infidelity. Part of me felt that the ending could’ve been a bit more explosive or given us a peek into the future. Been loving this author as a go to for an entertaining read when I just want to escape to a little beach town on an island.

Fascinating Historical Fiction
Revisado: 11-19-24
Very interesting snapshot into 18th century France on the brink of and during the revolution. The mother/daughter storyline is very touching though heartbreakingly sad. I appreciated the gentle healing of the trauma cycles towards the end. The pacing is a casual stroll down a meandering path. Rich in description and details which I appreciate in a story. I enjoyed reading it very much my only criticism would be that there was no strong climax. A sudden rush of dopamine that turns the story on its head. If you enjoy historical fiction especially when it’s focused around a woman’s perspective I recommend this.

My favorite series I’ve read in a long time
Revisado: 11-14-24
There’s a lot to love here. I really didn’t feel complete at the end of the first 2 books but this finale left me fully satisfied and it was a rewarding journey all the way through. Great character development. Intense climax. Much needed revenge. Forbidden love. Immersive historical descriptions. I look forward to hearing more from this author.

Page turning dark academia!
Revisado: 10-04-24
Wow the twist was well done and satisfying climax. I especially enjoyed the complex sister relationship. I felt absorbed into this world as I was reading. I appreciated the 2 different narrators for the voice of the two sisters. It made the time jumps easy to follow. The pacing was great. I felt like I didn’t want to put it down with each puzzle piece of the mystery being revealed. Then wow the climax really hit me. So great plot twists in there. The perfect spooky season read. My favorite dark academia since Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo. This one is not so much if a fantasy but more mind bending in a very real way.

Just okay
Revisado: 08-24-24
It is what it is. A Victorian romance with a murder mystery. The writing was just ok, pretty generic. Most characters are pretty 2-dimensional. I found it entertaining enough to finish.

Ashowen family reunion
Revisado: 06-25-24
I loved that Annika and Finn joined in as key characters for this last installment of the burning witch. The tensions built up to the final climax that felt slightly anticlimactic but for now I will see how these developments continue into the next series. I’m a huge fan of The House Witch and this series has been a satisfying continuation. My critique for this novel is that it seemed like the author relied heavily on dialogue between different characters to move the plot forward and sometimes this pulled me out of the fantasy as the dense dialogue felt a bit like being explained to rather than showing us through storytelling. Not that big of a deal but not something I have noticed while reading the other novels. It gave me the sense that the vision for the book was longer originally but needed to be shortened and so the compensated by inserting plot points and reveals into dialogues to move things along faster. Looking forward to the next series!
