Historia
For the last 100,000 years, we Sapiens have accumulated enormous power. But despite all our discoveries, inventions, and conquests, we now find ourselves in an existential crisis. The world is on the verge of ecological collapse. Misinformation abounds. And we are rushing headlong into the age of AI—a new information network that threatens to annihilate us. For all that we have accomplished, why are we so self-destructive? Nexus looks through the long lens of human history to consider how the flow of information has shaped us, and our world.

Probably the most compelling but anxiety inducing listen I have listened to ever. For Futurists that could use a humbling reminder of what Stalinism did to people and their families and friends. And yes, very closely linked to A.I.

A Fairytale for Adults
Revisado: 04-10-24
While I can't comment on what was expanded from the original Lightning Tree, I will say that this a delightful listen for those looking for even more experiences in this setting as well as wanting more of Bast and his antics. That said, the children featured predominantly in this short story steal the show. They are funny, cute, sassy, brave, gloomy, and tragic. Whether you see a loved one or your younger self in them, Bast brings the best out of them in their interactions. Great stuff.
I will also say that the author's notes included are particularly poignant, the author seems like a truly wonderful father and it shows in his words here in how he engages with them. Truly inspirjng stuuf and definitely makes for a compelling listen as I find myself caught up on the series.
Really am hoping we can see more of Kvothe soon!

My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me. So begins a tale told from his own point of view - a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man’s Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

Truly something experimental and epic
Revisado: 03-29-24
Much like the first entry in this series, all I can say is that this novel has such a unique narrative to experience. A frame story in the same vein as The Canterbury Tales interlaced between a larger-than-life biographical account of a fantasy hero's rise to prominence as a young man. it's Harry Potter in many places, then there's a larger than life quest right out of a Sword & Sorcery novella, and suddenly the main character is having a training arc akin to one seen in a Shōnen anime. Each having a certain vibe that flows excellently into the next bit with a firm singular narrative holding it all together.
if there's any faults to this novel it would be two points that I ultimately believe are inconsequential for those looking to jump into this book or the franchise as a whole. Firstly, this is a dense novel. it demands attention to fully appreciate it's many nuances, so it may make for hard listening as an audio book if you are used to lighter fare. Secondly, this is the end of the line for this franchise (as of the time if this writing) save for two, very, short novellas. There's a possibility there won't be a third true entry.
Even so, The Canterbury Tales was never finished and there's real value to reading those stories. The Kingkiller Chronicle, with a similar frame story, is also holds real substantial value in reading.
Definitely give this sequel. and the series a go if you're not enchanted already!

Historia
In the 12 unforgettable tales of Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century, the strange is made familiar and the familiar strange, such that a girl growing wings on her legs feels like an ordinary rite of passage, while a bug-infested house becomes an impossible Kafkaesque nightmare. Each story builds a new world all its own: A group of children steal a haunted doll; a runaway bride encounters a sea monster; a vendor sells toy boxes that seemingly control the passage of time; an insomniac is seduced by the Sandman.

For fans of Black Mirror and The Twilight Zone
Revisado: 10-10-23
Consider my rating more of a 3.5 if anything. This is a worthwhile listen, especially it you think of yourself as a fan of the aforementioned TV shows. Some of these short stories are bangers, especially the first one that you hear in the preview. a couple of others are also pretty good, but lean so heavily into Stranger Things-esque settings that I've had to double check if they actually take place in the early 00s when I was a kid or if the entire title of the collection is a misnomer.
The other stories all present an interesting premise that has some sci-fi/supernatural angle, but they either overstay their welcome just a little bit or just feel like a bit of a drag to listen to at times. Not all, but some and your mileage may vary.
Ultimately, I think what I don't like about these least interesting stories is what makes the better ones stand out. Each is read like a theatrical performance piece of sorts. This works great when characters are interacting with other characters but gets too drawn out and enters a realm of experimental prose at times in the audio audiobook format when the main character is narrating to themselves.
Overall. despite my seemingly harsh rating, I'm still going to recommend this one to those who have read this review this far. If you're someone wistfully nostalgic for weird period pieces about..um, girls starting their peripds or haunted dolls and metaphors for growing up. These stories particular are worth experiencing. if you're also someone deeply interested in bleak futures, these stories will also be for you.
In fact, the final story sort of combines both of these into a synergy of sorts - one obviously heavily inspired by the phenomenon of people losing their sense of taste during Covid-19. The main character is one of many in her generation who gets fixated on the nostalgia for the taste of food while her daughter and her peers have largely forgotten about what the big deal was and have moved on to whatever lies ahead in their future.
it's a great conclusion and tying together of the collection's themes and motifs, but...the performative prose just doesn't do it for me.

Canterbury Tales meets Harry Potter
Revisado: 02-16-23
What a treat this was to discover and listen to. If you're looking for a fantasy to engross yourself in, then you should consider this at once! Bookended and occasionally interrupted (in the most fun ways) by the frame story of a scribe recording the biography of a near-legendary figure in the world's setting. All told in the third-person perspective. However, the majority of the novel is relayed in first-person by the protagonist at the center of this whole tale, who hypes up his deeds and accomplishments throughout like he's an anime character. Masterfully, the author nor their prose ever succumbs to the failings that one usually sees with these main characters in magic school shonen or the likes of Harry Potter. This is an epic in the making for mature, adult readers who still nevertheless retain that fanciful desire for coming-of-age adventures at a Hogwarts that's more college than boarding school.

From the hero whistleblower of the infamous Theranos scam, Thicker than Water is a look at never-before-revealed details behind closed doors at the company, revealing a cautionary tale of corporate bullying, gaslighting, ego, and wealth running amok in Silicon Valley. Tyler Shultz had been in the workforce for less than a year when he emailed Elizabeth Holmes, his employer and the CEO and founder of Theranos, with concerns that the company’s lab practices were faulty, ignored quality control, and were potentially dangerous to patients.

A Disappointing Addendum to Bad Blood
Revisado: 06-10-22
Tyler seems like a likeable guy, I'm about the same age as him I think, but the decision to make this a podcast instead of an autobiography was a mistake. Just listen to John Carreyrou's book instead. That said, Tyler's parents and his step-grandmother are real heroes in this story. Which refreshingly wholesome.

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.
