Fascinating and Revealing
Revisado: 04-23-23
It’s not coincidental nor accidental that we are where we are in this country. This illuminates how power, greed and capitalism collide and how one person and one family’s influence can change an entire society’s culture, temperate and views.

It seems like any other day. You wake up, drink a cup of coffee, and head out. But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. The contents of this mysterious box tells you the exact number of years you will live. From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?

Emblematic!
Revisado: 08-30-22
I really enjoyed this book. My father passed earlier this year (2022) rather suddenly. I’m not sure if I really grieved. But this actually helped me with the suddenness of his passing. The book is NOT sad though there is sadness. I think you feel a lot. The vague similarity between the one term president who is grossly dislikable. The ease in which prejudice and privilege coexist and grow. How uncomplicated yet difficult relationships are. And how we all are 6 degrees of separation even if we don’t know it. All an all a a really good read!

But this was awful and outdated. The readers voice is terrible and inflections odd. Plus the material offered vague generalities vs substance and usefulness.

Engaging and Insightful
Revisado: 11-29-21
I had no expectations before reading as I was unfamiliar with her work prior to this reading. She is me but knew how to become what I envisioned. I appreciate the tone yet softness presented, the varied musings with intentionality and her ability to speak plain all while demonstrating the natural code switch educated black women often traverse. Thus work insightful, personable, rich in analysis yet vulnerable. Great read!

A more than good read! A little disappointing at the ending but I guess there really wasn’t more to be told.

Historia
When Elwood Curtis, a black boy growing up in 1960s Tallahassee, is unfairly sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy, he finds himself trapped in a grotesque chamber of horrors. Elwood’s only salvation is his friendship with fellow “delinquent” Turner, which deepens despite Turner’s conviction that Elwood is hopelessly naive, that the world is crooked, and that the only way to survive is to scheme and avoid trouble.

Awesome story. Character, strength, resolve, trauma, abuse, classism, poverty, racism and a system and network that protects it all.
