Bill Bryson has been an enormously popular author both for his travel books and for his books on the English language. Now, this beloved comic genius turns his attention to science. Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

absolutely great
Revisado: 03-14-25
I have only positives to say about this book. I learned a ton and afterwards downloaded everything else Bill Bryson wrote. Bryson is a great narrator too, but no one can beat Simon Vance... or whatever name he did this under

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

None of these stories stood out to me as much as Crevasse but they were all creepy and enjoyable. They are all very different from each other.
The narrator is mostly great but some accents just don't work for her. She does have a beautiful voice though.

but it's definitely not just "family life!" I think it's more like a horror story. I liked it very much but I wish there was a little more explanation at the end. This was extremely well written and will stick with me for a long time, I'm sure. The narrator was perfect.

Historia
High-altitude climbing is difficult enough without supernatural creatures thrown into the mix. Unfortunately for Greg and Quinn, they may have stumbled into just such a situation. A few days into their weeklong trek, they begin noticing strange occurrences. Voices outside their tent, a mysterious hiker off in the distance, and a predator that might be the end of them. Five hundred feet above safety and 1,000 feet below it, can two young climbers manage to survive long enough for help to arrive, or will they become yet more mysterious disappearances on the high mountain peaks?

Do not listen before bed!
Revisado: 02-13-24
This was deliciously scary! I'm usually impervious to horror so I started this one in bed... and could not stop! Had to finish it before I could go to sleep. Then it was hard to sleep because it was so spooky! I enjoyed it immensely.
The narrator seemed like not the best choice at first (it's a male POV in the beginning) but she really does nail the spookiness!

pretty good!

A little bit racist, a little bit sexist. There's ivory hunting and medical inaccuracies too. But, it is a good story with a compelling main character that makes me want to try the second book in the series

Historia
Deep in the Arctic wilderness, Peter Freuchen awoke to find himself buried alive under the snow. During a sudden blizzard the night before, he had taken shelter underneath his dogsled and become trapped there while he slept. Now, as feeling drained from his body, he managed to claw a hole through the ice only to find himself in even greater danger: his beard, wet with condensation from his struggling breath, had frozen to his sled runners and lashed his head in place, exposing it to icy winds that needed only a few minutes to kill him. If Freuchen could escape that, he could escape anything.
