Just Ok, took a long time to get in motion
Revisado: 12-16-24
This has great bones. There’s a lot here that works really well. My issue with it is that it took so long to get going and it had so many different major stories going on at one time. The climactic end should have been the toward the middle. There was a huge reveal in the last 5 minutes of the story that could have kept the whole thing together if it was sooner. The characters turn unlikable toward the end when most of them become dead weight or irrelevant. It could have been about half the length with twice as much going on.

I'm sorry but the narrator has a lisp
Revisado: 08-23-24
I really don't want to disparage anyone or say anything negative about someone personally. There's one thing with this book that I couldn't get past and that's the narrator's lisp. It is extremely distracting and pulls me completely from the story. I can't find any reviews on Audible at all so this may be the first one. I'm sorry to the narrator but I was hard to listen.

No one will agree...too much sex
Revisado: 04-17-24
I really like the world that the author has built. He keeps things moving enough that you don't get too bored and he lays in enough layers that the twists and turns flow really well. Revelations aren't jarring and leaving you questioning plot, but they've been set in motion early and make sense as soon as they're revealed. The combat is great. The heroes are flawed but you still want them to win and empathize with them.
There are two gripes I have with this book. One with this particular book is, there's too much sex. There's so much detail and time spent on things that I didn't buy the book for. It's like opening up a bag of jelly beans and half are licorice. It was disappointing to skip so much of a book that I'd looked forward to.
The second gripe is the cruelty and gore. I get that the bad guys are bad and vampires live through blood and with that comes a certain amount of blood and guts, but there was a point where it was gratuitous and lost it's impact. There's only so times that you can describe something before you're repeating yourself.
Overall, I liked it. It's a good "Empire Strikes Back" for a trilogy. I would be raving about this book if the writer could edit some more out.

Miles better make it
Revisado: 01-04-24
I've listened to all of these. I've got 2 hours left on this one and I like it enough to write a review. The series is good. RC Bray is always good. BUT...If something happens to Mile's, I will quit this thing altogether. I had the same feeling about Amos in the Expanse. They're my favorite characters. Protect them.

Good but a little too much of the same joke
Revisado: 09-22-22
I'm a fan of Jeremy Robinson but this was a little too much of the same type of joke. Once you notice it, you can't break away from it. It gets a little tedious and it brings you out of the story. It's like grease on a tool. You have to try really hard to hold on to the thread of the story. RC Bray is a great narrator but this one was difficult to root for.

It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

A MMO game guide, very little story,
Revisado: 08-08-22
I hung with this book for a long time. I really tried. I wanted to like it but man was it bad. It starts out with some activity. A guy is suddenly in a video game world and has the menu and mana bars and whatever. He and his new friends fight their way out of a dungeon and then proceed to spend the next 6 hours of a book reading a game manual. His training isn't exciting discovery of skills. It's a conversation panel in a game. That's exactly what came to mind while he's being explained all these things. Most of the dialogue is the type of thing thrown up in text bubbles that you skip because it has no impact on the story. The narrator does his best to power through the stat reads that get to be dreaded and monotonous.
This would be a great concept but the expectation bogs down in minutia of the "game" aspect.

It's ok...a little wordy, still pretty good.
Revisado: 05-07-21
I've been waiting for this book to come out for a while. I really like the world that Drew Hayes has built. I also enjoy his storytelling and how he covers details and questions for that world. That being said, this was too much of it. All the exposition and detail gets repetitive. The Wheel of Time books were the same way, It pulls you out of the story when the same thing is said every time the story switches to their point of view. I like the story and I'll probably get the next one but there was a good bit of fat on this one that could have been cut.

The name's Fetch Phillips - what do you need? Cover a Gnome with a crossbow while he does a dodgy deal? Sure. Find out who killed Lance Niles, the big-shot businessman who just arrived in town? Dark fantasy noir
Revisado: 12-02-20
The first audiobooks I ever listened to were the noir, private eye type books like Maltese Falcon and the Big Sleep. I love the main character to be flawed yet capable and have that backstory that you always know there’s more to. This is probably one of my favorite new series. It’s paced very well and layered in the same way as all the best noir mystery stories.
I think the best part, and the trademark of these type of stories is, there isn’t a happy ending. Sometimes aspects are worse than they started, but the sun comes up on a new day and the protagonist goes into work to solve another problem.
Content wise, it’s a little more mature rated than I’d like but still a great book.

Not much KTF
Revisado: 08-07-20
I'm a big fan of the Galaxy's Edge books. They're all Star Wars and sci-fi mixed together and poured out into something that's close to all of them to be familiar but different enough to be interesting.
However, this one was slow and plodding. It took a long time for things to get going and when they did, it was just for a beat and then back to a monotonous and predictable story. Every other Galaxy's Edge I've read/listened to has been like watching another epic story unfold. This one was more like the monotony in between those epics.

Not as good as Tao
Revisado: 08-07-20
I was really excited when the whole Io series started out. Chu has built a great believable world for these stories. The first thing that got me was the narrator saying "Lead" as is the material instead of "Lead" with a long E. There are little problems like this that weren't caught in the narration and kinda break the story.
Both main characters aren't very likable. Io is more of the antagonist when you get to the end and look back at the story. Ella isn't much better. She has absolutely no common sense to the point that I was completely unsympathetic to her when she came across a problem. The writing became extremely repetitive. Roan would complain about being old and fantasize about his garden ever time the story was from his point of view. I don't think any of the characters really had an arch at all.
I sped this book up to get it over with. I want to follow what happens in this world but the characters in both Io books feel so wooden and irritating that I'm not sure if I'll get the next one.
