Historia
Despite his youth, Declan Idrys knows of the evils of the world. He knows of the bastards and brigands who plague the King's lands, of the monsters skulking in the wooded depths of the realm. Together with his companion, Ryn - a beast of rather peculiar talent - he has spent the last decade of his life beneath the bloody banners of a half-dozen mercenary guilds, hunting precisely such festering wickedness within the borders of Viridian.

An enticing, but poorly-paced, high fantasy romp
Revisado: 10-08-21
Mark of Kings is a fairly engaging story, featuring a strong mix of all one's favorite fantasy tropes- dragons, liches, zombies, magic, and an impressive amount of worldbuilding and history. Nick Podehl, as always, is a master narrator, and I've yet to be disappointed with a book he has covered. Mark of Kings really only has one downside, but it's a significant one; this story might be engaging, but it has really bad problems with its pacing. Roughly 2 consecutive hours were spent on exposition in the middle of the story, information about the world that would make events understandable to the reader arrive later than it should, the action is inconsistent, and that is a TERRIBLE place to end a novel. I'm still going to get Book 2 because I want to see where the story goes from here, but I really hope O'Connor and Chmilenko used a story board the second time around.

Historia
Mackenzie Walker wasn't planning on using her college radio show to solve a decades-old murder, but when she receives an anonymous tip that the wrong man may have taken the fall, she can't resist digging deeper. It doesn't take long for Mackenzie to discover gaps in the official story. Several potential witnesses conveniently disappeared soon after the murder. The victim, a glamorous heiress and founder of a Kentucky horse-racing dynasty, left behind plenty of enemies. And the cops don't seem particularly interested in discussing any of it.

M is for MAN this story is great
Revisado: 11-08-19
A compelling serialized story about the hunt for truth, starring a flawed protagonist that you can't help but root for every step of the way.

Historia
It's a period of turmoil in Britain, with the country's politicians electing to remove the UK from the European Union, despite ever-increasing evidence that the public no longer supports it. And the small town of Lychford is suffering. But what can three rural witches do to guard against the unknown? And why are unwary hikers being led over the magical borders by their smartphones' mapping software? And is the immigration question really important enough to kill for?

an excellent story marred by abysmal narrating
Revisado: 12-24-18
I have binged the Lychford series over the course of the last month, and I have greatly enjoyed its humor, creativity, and overall, its brilliant characterizations of its three main characters. The third installment is no different; the conflict between the women and the supernatural forces at large continues to escalate, the characters continue to be fleshed out further by exploring concepts of disability and racism, and the author boldly explores how real world issues such as Brexit would affect life in their tiny town of Lychford.
Unfortunately, this story is blighted by some pretty awful narrating this time around. The previous two narrators were so good, I didn't even notice they weren't the same person until I wrote this review. Book 3s narrator lacked all the finesse and charm of the previous two, and brought to the table an obnoxious accent that was a mix between Irish and Cockney. This made what was previously a super engaging series very hard to listen to for extended periods. narratively speaking this is a great book, but I really hope Audible is more selective when choosing who reads the fourth book.

This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

Borderline perfection
Revisado: 04-17-16
This will join Lord of The Rings in the pantheon of fantasy series. Patrick Rothfuss creates a fantasy world that blends the mystical and archaic with the modern and enlightened, and provides us with a compelling protagonist in the form of a bright and curious boy who will one day become a legend.
