Historia
To the wider world, Al Pacino exploded onto the scene like a supernova. He landed his first leading role, in The Panic in Needle Park, in 1971, and by 1975, he had starred in four movies—The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon—that were not just successes but landmarks in the history of film. Those performances became legendary and changed his life forever. Not since Marlon Brando and James Dean in the late 1950s had an actor landed in the culture with such force.

A Great Autobiography by a Humble Actor
Revisado: 11-13-24
Listening to Al Pacino describe how lucky and fortunate he was to work with brilliant actors while not bragging about his own gifts was a unique and moving tale of a truly extraordinarily gifted actor and very sweet human being.

Historia
Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties—successful, competent, and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father’s death, he’s medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women—his enduring first love, Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke. Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother. Now, in the early weeks of his bereavement, Ivan meets Margaret.

Beautifully Written & Narrated
Revisado: 10-10-24
As a participant in a short story group, we read an excerpt of Intermezzo that was recently published in The New Yorker. While I had never read any of Sally Rooney’s books, after reading the short story of when Ivan meets Margaret, I immediately downloaded the book. The story is so beautifully constructed and the characters are brilliantly brought to life, that upon finishing the book, I began looking forward to what I imagined would be the next chapter or this compelling novel.

Historia
J.R. Moehringer grew up captivated by a voice. It was the voice of his father, a New York City disc jockey who vanished before J.R. spoke his first word. Sitting on the stoop, pressing an ear to the radio, J.R. would strain to hear in that plummy baritone the secrets of masculinity and identity. Though J.R.'s mother was his world, his rock, he craved something more, something faintly and hauntingly audible only in The Voice.

Greatest Memoir Worth Listening to!
Revisado: 06-11-23
Most or actually all the memoirs I’ve read over the years have been written by historical figures or famous musicians, writers and actors. The Tender Bar was written by someone who became famous as a result of writing his story of being an only child being raised by a single mother after his father fled when he was just a child. It’s a remarkably written and beautifully read book and it might inspire other folks to consider sharing their stories too. I did see the movie that was made based on the book but I would discourage you from watching the movie until you first listen or read the entire book!

A Brilliant Historical Memoir!
Revisado: 02-09-23
The People vs Donald Trump is beautifully written and read by Mark Pomerantz, who had been recruited to help the Manhattan’s District Attorney’s Office build a case against Donald Trump for financial crimes associated with his business empire. Mark Pomerantz has written a book that explains why he was so convinced that his team had a great case against Trump and his frustrations when the newly elected District Attorney refused to proceed with the case. As a result, Mark Pomerantz resigned and proceeded to write this brilliant book. Mr. Pomerantz is not only a great writer but he is also a wonderful narrator!

Historia
When a mysterious figure appears in Three Pines one cold November day, Armand Gamache and the rest of the villagers are at first curious. Then wary. Through rain and sleet, the figure stands unmoving, staring ahead. From the moment its shadow falls over the village, Gamache, now Chief Superintendent of the Sûreté du Québec, suspects the creature has deep roots and a dark purpose. Yet he does nothing. What can he do? Only watch and wait. And hope his mounting fears are not realized.

Not My Favorite Louise Penny Novel
Revisado: 08-27-22
I have been loving the Inspector Gamache novels and while i have become addicted to listening as well as reading Louise Penny’s brilliant stories, I felt that Glass Houses seemed as if the author’s heart was not totally committed to the plot. I would still encourage you to continue to read the books in the sequence that they are written i just felt that this book didn’t match the previous stories in the series. Having said this, i love the narrator and look forward to reading & listening to her next book!

James Bryant Conant was a towering figure. He was at the center of the mammoth threats and challenges of the 20th century. As a young eminent chemist, he supervised the production of poison gas in WWI. As a controversial president of Harvard University, he was a champion of meritocracy and open admissions. As an advisor to FDR, he led the interventionist cause for US entrance in WWII.

One of the Top 10 Books of the Year
Revisado: 04-29-22
Man of the Hour is a brilliantly written biography of James Conant, who in addition to being President of Harvard for twenty years was instrumental in helping to guide the Manhattan Project , create the Educational Testing Service and spend decades trying to help Presidents Roosevelt, Truman & Eisenhower create policies to help bring about policies to lessen the likelihood of atomic warfare. Before I began listening to Man of the Hour, I had never heard of James Conant. However after listening to this very long but brilliantly written and narrated book, I have a profound appreciation of who James Conant was and how he devoted his life to helping “ even the playing field” in education.

The Best Audible Book of 2022! A Classic Autobiography
Revisado: 03-23-22
Harvey Fierstein shares his remarkable and extraordinary creative life with humor snd humility and as a result of hiss brilliant writing and wonderful narration, you will feel like a reader snd a member in the audience as he takes us through his evolution and metamorphosis into one of the greatest actors snd writers of such classic plats as Torch Song Trilogy, Hairspray, Kinky Boots and his latest remake of Funny Girl and that’s just a few of his shows he’s written. He has also started in productions of Fiddler On The Roof and many other shows. What I found truly mind blowing is that Harvey Fierstein was the first actor and writer to take homosexuality out of the closet and make it relevant and entertaining on Broadway. His contributions are innumerable and his book will move you to want to buy the print copy as well so you’ll be able to flip through the pages and revisit his remarkable life.

Miracle and Wonder: Conversations with Paul Simon is part memoir, part investigation, and unlike any creative portrait you’ve ever heard before. Recorded over a series of 30 hours of conversation between Simon, Gladwell, and Gladwell’s oldest friend and co-writer, journalist and Broken Record podcast co-host Bruce Headlam, the conversation flows from Simon’s music, to his childhood in Queens, NY, to his frequent collaborators including Art Garfunkel and the nature of creativity itself.

Having grown up listening to Simon & Garfunkel records and then remaining a loyal and dedicated fan of Paul Simon’s musical career, I found Miracle and Wonder to be a fascinating series of interviews conducted by both Malcolm Gladwell and Bruce Headlam. While I’ve read books about Paul Simon’s career, I found this book to be the most revealing about how Simon wrote and developed some of his most famous songs.

Breaking The Code That Led to the Vaccine!
Revisado: 02-22-22
As I struggled to find a fitting title to a book that I feel might be Walter Isaacson’s greatest contribution to helping us appreciate how Jennifer Doudna helped lead teams of biochemists from around the world to discover a cure to the Coronavirus. Breaking The Code tells the story of a young woman who had to fight with advisers who felt she should study French instead of pursuing a career as a scientist but who strived to devote her life to finding cures to debilitating and deadly illnesses. Not only does Doudna win a Nobel Prize but Isaacson happens to be researching his book while Jennifer is on her quest to help save us from the Coronavirus! My guess is you may not have heard of Jennifer Doudna and you might wonder how someone so instrumental in the quest for a cure isn’t a name on everyone’s lips! After you read this book, you will not only appreciate what a brilliant scientist she is but also have a much wiser understanding of how those home tests actually work! I think this book should be required reading in all high schools! It might lead to many more students pursuing careers as biochemists!
