From the very beginning this book was an utter pleasure! I usually read non fiction and instructional books. This book was a lovely reminder to read for pleasure. It was beautifully written and read or listened to with such ease. A true escape. A real time out. I hope this book becomes a series!

I just finished this audio book. I felt it was an earnest, humble, loving, heartbreaking and courageous story about the grief and loss of a spouse with very special insights into a families grief from the loss of suicide. It was a real love story, told.

For anyone that lives with suicidal ideation. This is a sobering reality of the aftermath of a life lost to suicide.

There was a backlash and a lot of anger directed at Allison from his family and the Dance community for writing this book. Stephen’s family wants to sue Allison for writing this book because they feel she has tarnished his legacy.

I didn’t experience it in this way. I feel she shared her story, her perspective on their love story and she and her children’s journey through their grief, “This Far.”

I feel she gave Stephen “Twitch” Boss the dignity of being a dimensional human being and the dignity of standing in his fate while she stands in hers in the sharing of her grief process and how that unfolded earnestly.

I believe she wrote this book as an offering and hope that maybe her families journey through grief will save a life, if not lives and that their struggles, their naivety, their youngness, their wounds, their ignorance and his darkness was also a part of the love in their marriage, and part of the love Stephen was and is. That maybe, just maybe, the tragic loss of his life will save other Black men’s lives, in particular but also the lives of anyone that struggles with suicidal ideation.

Perhaps it will make people question the safety of taking natural psychedelic drugs without a professional long term commitment to that process. I know I have left “This Far” questioning if the psychedelics he took and may have taken played a serious role in the ultimate tragic loss of his life.

While I think the Black community may have deep sorrow and remorse about how race may have come into play around a White woman not being able to truly support a Black man. The way Allison’s inability to see her husband’s true vulnerabilities and struggles and her ability to truly understand him as Black American Man didn’t just come from her own wounds or unconsciousness or his but racial and cultural divides.

Having been in interracial relationships particularly with Black American men as a White American woman; it left me honestly with a deeper understanding of and questioning just how dangerous is it to be in an interracial relationship? It’s a question to live with, to love, to bring awareness too, not from a place of fear but from a place of commitment and willingness and love. And an understanding, for as potentially dangerous as it is, it is also beautiful and POWERFUL when love transcends cultural and racial divide.

Allison says in the end something like given the choice I would chose loving Stephen and experiencing Stephen’s love again knowing he was going to leave us. This, is powerful, after hearing her story and she and her children’s grief processes that feel like and are, a life sentence of grief. A testament to her love for Stephen.

I think the most powerful question I am left with is, if racial divides in understanding one another’s vulnerabilities and survival strategies did play a powerful role in his demise. I am left with the question would Stephen as a Black American man chose his love and life with Allison a White American woman again knowing the way it would end?

One thing we are left with is the power of their love. It was and will always be: powerful.

I hope people read or listen to this book and remain in conversation.

It is a powerful story. Heartbreakingly powerful.

Suicide, love and race are a part of the conversation in this book and a part of their grief process and leave you with a lot to think about.

Just some good ole art talk. Very resourcing: lol’d. When you mix a host whose life is rooted in meditation and artists, talking about their art and body of work. It’s just some good time with some genuine space between thoughts and feelings; quite relaxing.

I listened to this on three day road trip from Phoenix to Colorado Springs and back. It was the perfect listen for this trip: the last two hours of the book was complimented by a lonely road on a hot dessert summer night and a full moon. I will never forget the experience. Transporting. Great listen: including enjoyed the voice actor! Highly recommend.

Like I said this book was thought provoking and worthy of your time. There were a few chapters that I lost interest in for ten or fifteen minutes just because honestly certain issues like childcare are no longer an issue for me or it got a tad bit more into policy detail than I have an attention span for BUT!!!! listen to the whole of it if you commit to buying it. It's a wonderful bicultural perspective on policy and will open your mind particularly if you
are an American!!!! Excellent overall and so grateful to have read!!!!
