A long overdue biography
Revisado: 11-25-24
There was a time when I would not have given a second thought about the likes of Charles Sumner, but the years have given way to just enough wisdom to consider why I had always heard or read the name without much backstory. There he was when I was learning about Lincoln and Douglass.
This book was important to me.

Historia
Ralph Elllison's Invisible Man is a monumental novel, one that can well be called an epic of modern American Negro life. It is a strange story, in which many extraordinary things happen, some of them shocking and brutal, some of them pitiful and touching—yet always with elements of comedy and irony and burlesque that appear in unexpected places. It is a book that has a great deal to say and which is destined to have a great deal said about it.

Historia
Kurt Vonnegut was 20 years old when he enlisted in the United States Army. Less than two years later, he was captured by the Germans in the single deadliest US engagement of the war, the Battle of the Bulge. He was taken to a POW camp, then transferred to a work camp near Dresden, and held in a slaughterhouse called Schlachthof Fünf where he survived the horrific firebombing that killed thousands and destroyed the city. Writing during the tumultuous days of the Vietnam conflict, Vonnegut took his trauma and created a work of art, one that still resonates today.

This book explored the depth in great form
Revisado: 05-13-23
I was impressed by the evidence, the resetting of expectations, the clarity of terms such as PTSD. Most of all, I was satisfied that in the end, the author left the most important conclusions up to the reader. What I had not expected was the accounts of the contributors who expanded my understanding of what trauma is. Finally, I appreciated the advice to read Slaughterhouse Five more than once because it may have new meaning as you age. I can do that!

Historia
For much of his life, historian Howard Zinn chronicled American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version taught in schools - with its emphasis on great men in high places - to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of - and in the words of - America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.

Recommend Reading
Revisado: 02-13-23
I recommend this book for anyone who seeks to understand a broader perspective even though it is not (self-admiringly) a complete perspective. It gives the reader the information from which to fact-check. Then you may draw your own conclusions.

Historia
Dred Scott was an unlikely candidate to become the impetus and rallying cry of a brand-new political party in the mid-19th century. He was sold to US Army doctor John Emerson in St. Louis, Missouri. Emerson's commission brought him to the Wisconsin Territory in 1836, which was free territory where slavery was illegal. By 1840, Dred Scott had married another slave of Emerson's, and the couple had a child. Desperate to shake off the yoke of slavery, Scott sued for his freedom in Missouri, arguing that once he had entered free territory he could no longer be a slave.

Historia
As a young man, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. He wrote three versions of his autobiography over the course of his lifetime and published his own newspaper. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence, he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.

A journey into the depth of a great man
Revisado: 09-24-22
Through the telling of this book, my perspective of Frederick Douglass is more complete. There was so much I did not know about him.
The chapter which details the horror of the civil war and particularly the perils of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment stood out as the moment in which I was compelled to grieve.
Finally, the epilogue left me with a vivid depiction of all things Frederick Douglass.

Tom and Charlie are living out what's left of their lives on their own terms in a remote forest, two pot growers their only connection to the outside world. But then two women arrive - a photographer on the trail of survivors of a decades-ago forest fire and an elderly escapee from a psychiatric institution - and everything changes. And the Birds Rained Down, the recipient of several prizes, is a haunting meditation on aging and self-determination.

I started to think that this book was not for someone like me and that I would not like it very much. Eventually the characters came to life and the way that I had not anticipated.

Historia
Heather McGhee’s specialty is the American economy—and the mystery of why it so often fails the American public. From the financial crisis of 2008 to rising student debt to collapsing public infrastructure, she found a root problem: racism in our politics and policymaking. But not just in the most obvious indignities for people of color. Racism has costs for white people, too. It is the common denominator of our most vexing public problems, the core dysfunction of our democracy and constitutive of the spiritual and moral crises that grip us all.

An Excellent Discourse
Revisado: 09-05-21
This was a well written book that would benefit all people to read, consider, challenge and to engage with others about.
The audio and narration by the author was excellent. I have so much more praise to offer but I fear it will be a novel in and of itself.
