Historia
Newbery Award-winner Gary Paulsen's best-known book comes to audio in this breathless, heart-gripping drama about a boy pitted against the wilderness with only a hatchet and a will to live. On his way to visit his recently divorced father in the Canadian mountains, thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson is the only survivor when the single-engine plane crashes. His body battered, his clothes in shreds, Brian must now stay alive in the boundless Canadian wilderness.

Childhood Favorite Revisited: AMAZING Narrator
Revisado: 09-28-20
I’ve lived in AK twice and I have had friends die from small plane crashes and I have done search & rescue and helped find survivors & been a chaplain to survivors. All of this means to me that Gary Paulsen clearly understands the mindset involved in what it takes to survive & his understanding of the subject matter is what makes this short book so rich and satisfying. Listened to it with my husband on a long car trip. He “hates all fiction” & “hates all audiobooks”. He LOVED Hatchet, as I knew he would. He has since purchased Paulsen’s memoir Guts for himself to read.

Historia
Eight hundred women and children begin a 1,200-mile journey on foot across Japanese-occupied Malaya. At journey’s end, only 30 will still be alive. This is the story of one woman, of her ordeal, and of how she was saved by the sacrifice of an Australian soldier. It is a story of rare individual courage in the face of certain death, and hope in the face of despair.

Racist story perhaps best remembered or Abridged
Revisado: 12-11-19
I remembered loving this book when I picked it up somewhere in college - but my guess is that I read an updated and abridged version. It’s true time ravages memory but I’ve always been sensitive to racism, even in context and just as I don’t remember much of the drama that takes place in Australia (frankly I remember it ending there and not taking up half the book), I do not remember the characterization of the Indigenous Australians. My guess is ai read an abridged book. The narration is excellent and the first half of the book is still riveting.

A moving coming-of-age story set in the 1900s, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn follows the lives of 11-year-old Francie Nolan, her younger brother Neely, and their parents, Irish immigrants who have settled in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Johnny Nolan is as loving and fanciful as they come, but he is also often drunk and out of work, unable to find his place in the land of opportunity.

I waited over 30 Years to Read this Great Novel & It Was Worth It
Revisado: 11-30-19
Sometimes you delay gratification to get the full effect. As a fiend of mine’s father grew up with the author I had always known of this seminal work and knew I would love it - butt rather like Frannie the lead character, I also knew I might need some good books saved up for a rainy day, and this is one I saved. In this story of perseverance in the face of adversity, Regina Calcaterra recounts her childhood in foster care and on the streets and how she and her savvy crew of homeless siblings managed to survive years of homelessness, abandonment, and abuse. Regina Calcaterra's emotionally powerful memoir reveals how she endured a series of foster homes and intermittent homelessness in the shadow of the Hamptons, and how she rose above her past while fighting to keep her brother and three sisters together.

2/2 Regina Calcatura’s Life Story of Resilience Over Tragedy Inspires
Revisado: 10-22-19
I’ve read her two books out of order but it doesn’t matter. After reading the story of her younger sister’s life with their mother I continued to be fascinated by the details of how Regina and her siblings overcame the abuse they received at the hands of their mother and the system meant to protect them. After reading Regina’s own story of triumph and resilience I wish I could hear the voices and perspective of all of the siblings.

Strength & Thriving Despite Harrowing Abuse
Revisado: 05-11-18
The deep love of her sisters - who are far away - and the scraps of kindness that Rosie stitches together into a crazy quilt to help her survive are the beautiful parts of this story that kept me listening. The abuses dolled out by Cookie and later her step-dad made this book hard not to skip through at times. But as a champion of children who have survived abuse, I chose not to skip those scenes. If too many adults in Rosie's life couldn't recognize the signs of abuse or chose not to, than for those of us who are in positions where we're able to help children, than we need to be educated helpers. Child abuse - even at this magnitude - is so much more prevalent than society will admit. "Thrivers" like Rosie (I don't like the term "survivor" as it doesn't give the one who has "merely survived" enough credit) are more common than people know. I commend the teachers in her high school who finally recognized the signs of a girl who was screaming as loudly as her unbroken - but badly bruised - body could. May her story help other adults to open their eyes and see and act on to protect children against abuse in their lives as well. Bravo Rosie! Thank you for being so strong. Thank you for sharing your story!

Still Terrifying Even 20+ Years Later
Revisado: 04-30-18
I first read this book over 20 years ago. As a young woman this book comprised most of my nightmares. Now, as a woman who has “lived a little” - not many things have changed - and yet their is still something interesting about how being more experienced in life broadened my understanding of this book. As for the production of the audio book, Bravo! I was hesitant about Claire Danes and now my don’t know why I questioned the choice. She voiced Offred beautifully and sincerely added to the experience. I also grateful that I was able to hear author Margaret Atwood’s observations in the new afterward. All in all it’s books and performances like this that keep me coming back to Audible.

On March 17, 2009, Laura Ling and her colleague Euna Lee were working on a documentary about North Korean defectors who were fleeing the desperate conditions in their homeland. While filming on the Chinese/North Korean border, they were chased down by North Korean soldiers who violently apprehended them. Laura and Euna were charged with trespassing and "hostile acts," and imprisoned by Kim Jong Il's notoriously secretive Communist state.

Why I Love Audible: Well Told Personal Story
Revisado: 03-23-18
I’ve had an interest in N. Korea (DPRK) for a long time and I was very concerned for Laura Ling and Euna Lee at the time of the true events in this story. I was so moved ha as soon as this version of the events hit the press I immediately purchased and read the book. One of the pleasures of listening to an audio book for me is when the author(s) narrate. After returning a few titles that I wasn’t satisfied with I thought, I bet the Ling’s narration would really add to that story? As much as one can’t “put down” an audio book I’ve been glued to this story. As Laura and her sister Lisa narrate this deeply personal story it’s impossible not to be moved by the harrowing tale of survival, wits, and 2 sisters love for one another.

Historia
This haunting, harrowing, gloriously moving recollection of a life on the American margin is the story of Rick Bragg, who grew up dirt-poor in northeastern Alabama, seemingly destined for either the cotton mills or the penitentiary, and instead became a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The New York Times. It is the story of Bragg's father, a hard-drinking man with a murderous temper and the habit of running out on the people who needed him most.
