Great premise
Revisado: 11-30-24
It was a good story, well told. The sexism bothered me though. Why do only "moms" have school pick up and drop off duties? Why do 100 moms make the pie? Don't men cook in that town? I guess they just operate the industrial mixing equitment. Why are there so many stay-at-home moms in this story. It all seemed so 1950's.

Clarity grows with time
Revisado: 09-29-23
Maybe it's just me, but I was slightly confused in the first third. I couldn't quite tell where this was going. But then once I understood the premise, and the very story was about the almost mundane life that this interesting man "chose" to lead, it became one of the best books I've ever read. So beautifully written, such a wonderful depiction of how one acts when their life becomes very very small, but they somehow make simplicity dignified, meaningful, and beautiful.

How shall we measure this story?

It's always a huge compliment to a book when I finish it. And I definitely finished this book. Was it the best book I ever read? No. Was it the most interesting premise for a sci-fi concept? No. Was it thought-provoking and made you change the way you look at things? Yes, a little bit. The biggest question You have to ask yourself is "what would I have done?" Then if this book get you thinking about that it's worth reading. It's also a good story.

The world outside has grown toxic, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. The remnants of humanity live underground in a single silo. But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they want: They are allowed to go outside.

Start slow, end strong.
Revisado: 09-29-23
Honestly, I was slightly bored the first half because I had watched the first season of the series, made from the book, and the book was following right along with very little divergence. So I felt like I had already done this. But then it got so so compelling in the second half. I'm guessing I might not enjoy the TV series season two after reading this book. But it's worth doing both!

Revisado: 09-29-23
A really fun slightly sci-fi story, that feels relevant and current, much like Black Mirror, the Netflix series. It's the future; right in front of us! Is it true? Is it not true? Could be. Or maybe it couldn't be. Who knows. But this is a page turner.
