"If you understand completely what I am going to tell you, from this moment on, your life will never be the same again." -Earl Nightingale This amazing message was first played for a group of salespeople at Earl Nightingale's insurance agency. They were utterly electrified. Word of it spread like wildfire, and everyone who heard it was positively ignited into action. Requests for a recording of the message came pouring in - thousands of requests per week.

I consume many self help recordings but rarely felt as short changed as I have with this. The actual core content is less than 30 mins. Then you get a big ad for Conant and then an hour long interview with Conant himself. Very disappointed. I feel scammed.

Historia
Based on unrivalled access to all the key politicians and their advisors - including Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, George Osborne, Nigel Farage and Dominic Cummings, the mastermind of Vote Leave - Shipman has written a political history that reads like a thriller and offers a gripping day-by-day account of what really happened behind the scenes in Downing Street, both Leave campaigns, the Labour Party, Ukip and Britain Stronger in Europe.

blow by blow, word by word

Expertly written and superbly narrated.
Revisado: 09-06-22
Tim Shipman’s All Out War promises to tell us the ‘full story of how and why Britain voted to leave the EU’ and how that vote ‘shattered the political status quo.’ This book intrigued me because at the time of the referendum I was living in the USA, so even though as a Brit I was able to vote, I felt divorced from the day-to-day of the Brexit campaign.
Do not be scared off by the mammoth 32 hours of listening. The book is vividly brought to life by narrator Rupert Farley. He cleverly mimics the voices of many of the major players involved but just enough so as not to make this a parody. His narration coupled with Shipman’s accessible style of writing, made the hours fly by.
Tim Shipman is one of the most well-connected hacks in Westminster, and he proves it in this book delivering a behind the scenes look at both the leave and in campaigns. We are treated to many discussions and events that took place behind closed doors. In All Out War Shipman transforms the reader into a fly on the wall of the offices and halls of Westminster where much of this book take place.
Political writing can often be biassed, what makes All Out War such an engaging listen/read, is the even-handedness in which Shipman treats Brexit, a very controversial and emotional topic that divided the country. He does not allow his own feelings on Brexit to influence the story, I could not tell you if he was a leaver or remainer, so top marks to the author for that.
Shipman also has a knack for writing in a style that makes All Out War accessible to everyone and not just those who are involved in politics or hold a political science degree.
I would often stay up way past my bedtime as I wanted to know what happened next, sometimes I would have to remind myself that this is a true account rather than a fictional political thriller, that’s how talented Shipman is at creating a narrative based on his many sources and helping us to understand the political dynamics that were going on during Brexit.
My only word of caution is for non Brits who might want to Google or search YouTube for many of the politicians referenced in All Out War to understand the personalities and background of each player. I found myself tracking down some of the speeches and interviews referred to in the book on YouTube. Knowing the backstory made these videos even more intriguing to watch.
All Out War satisfied my thirst for knowledge about what really happened during the Brexit campaign and highlights the strengths and weaknesses of each campaign team on either side of the argument. This book will stand the test of time and I expect it will be read by future generations seeking to understand what the heck happened! I am still very angry at the referendum result though All Out War has helped me to understand why many people voted leave (it wasn’t just immigration) and the weaknesses in the In campaign.

One of the best self help books I have listened to
Revisado: 02-01-21
I won't lie, over the last decade I have got sick and tired of 'self-help' books written by 'gooroos' which are basically sales pitches for their expensive programs and products masquerading as a self-help book. They promise the world in the blurb, they give you a taste of what results they can deliver but rarely the 'how.' Usually you have to buy that for a hefty $ price with a 7 on the end.
Don't get me wrong Paul Mort has programs himself but this self-help book is unique in that the author shares what works, not just for him but for several other men who have followed his guidance. Paul shares his daily routine and that of his tribe, no expensive cryo chambers by the way - most of these can be done with a smartphone and a piece of paper. Paul's Northern style is not for everyone, if you want an arm around you and someone telling you that you can visualize losing weight or becoming a millionaire then he is not for you. He is not a jerk either, in this audiobook, he will give you tools to help you improve your life and those around you.
I should know, my life has improved tenfold since I started following Paul. I am not perfect and some days I still throw a hissy fit or snap at people but these are so much scarcer than before. I am no longer angry at the world, my childhood, people in my career, I now choose my attitude every morning and I can bulletproof my mind but only with daily practice and as Paul quite rightly says, by doing the work and doing what we said we would.
If you feel you need help in life and are jaded by buying motivation or self-help books that are full of fudge. mudge and b#llocks, then I urge you to give Paul Mort's audiobook a go. As a bonus he narrates the book himself, you can hear the emotion and passion in his voice and fortunately, there is no whale music.
This stuff takes works and constant practice, I will be listening to his book at least once a month going forward.

Historia
In this definitive biography - blessed by John le Carré himself - Adam Sisman reveals the man behind the bestselling persona. In John le Carré, Sisman shines a spotlight on David Cornwell, an expert at hiding in plain sight - "born to lying," he wrote in 2002, "bred to it, trained to it by an industry that lies for a living, practiced in it as a novelist."

The writer who came in from the cold
Revisado: 06-19-16
Having read all 23 of John Le Carre's novels I was keen to learn more about the man I have spent so many hours with.
Mr Sisman has written an excellent biography. I had no idea JLC had experienced so much in life. From his con man father to getting a knife to his throat in Kenya. From his days in the secret service to his exile to Cornwall. It's all here. Fascinating.

Historia
Who was Kim Philby? Those closest to him—like his fellow MI6 officer and best friend since childhood, Nicholas Elliot, and the CIA’s head of counterintelligence, James Jesus Angleton—knew him as a loyal confidant and an unshakeable patriot. Philby was a brilliant and charming man who rose to head Britain’s counterintelligence against the Soviet Union. Together with Elliott and Angleton he stood on the front lines of the Cold War, holding Communism at bay. But he was secretly betraying them both: He was working for the Russians the entire time.

Fascinating, why weren't we taught this at school
Revisado: 11-14-15
Recently I watched the BBC drama 'Cambridge Spies' and realised I knew next nothing about these traitors.
I searched for books on Philby and found many. I was attracted to A Spy Among Friends as its recent and other reviewers said it read like a spy novel.
I have nothing but admiration for the author and this work. I have much disgust for Philby.
John Lee narrates this in an engaging and intriguing fashion. Top marks.
