a great listen!
Revisado: 01-19-24
yet another fantastic work by this author! I think I might be a fan... this is my third book by this author and each one was a great experience... just like with her other books, the story is well-developed and well-written, easy to follow despite the length, engaging, exciting, thoughtful, well-researched, poignant and inspiring... yet again, she also masterfully developed all characters and they are likeable and relatable in all their glories and failures... and the narration is great and on point, making it a fantastic listen... I loved every minute of this book and was completely immersed in the story till it was over...

I enjoyed listening to this.. the topic is relatable and easy to follow.. we all struggle with some addictions in our lives, whether traditionally acknowledged or newly concepted, whether knowingly or unknowingly... this book brings to perspective some addictions that may not be obvious, addictions that may be veiled as just innocent daily habits.. but also, a good refresher on traditionally recognized additions... good explanations, sufficient scientific backing and an easy, informative listen... a listen that was well worth my time...

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

too tedious and boring
Revisado: 01-19-24
Im struggling to finish it... i missed the time to return it... its a well-research book that is written in a dry tone with too many details that just drag on and on, lacking engaging description which makes listening to this book tedious and boring... this had the potential of being a lot more suspenseful, interesting and exciting but as it is, this book is not for me... I expected a little more excitement considering the premise... but nah, not here...

pretty boring
Revisado: 03-29-21
i didnt like it much.. the story line is pretty boring.. i love me some good post-apocalyptic novel (eg Altwood, Butler, Ellison, etc) but this just didnt rise to the occasion... it didnt hold my attention.. it kinddah tries to be dreamlike and adventurous... it has potential but feels unfinished... there is a resolution to the mystery but the details and ideas feel unfinished and underdeveloped... not rising to the level of the setup and adventure presented... this could've used more drafts... like it could've been more interesting but the author got tired of trying to make it better so the details are not coherently intevowen weaking the overall plot... but on the plus side, its short...

Historia
Hallucinations don’t belong wholly to the insane. Much more commonly, they are linked to sensory deprivation, intoxication, illness, or injury. Here Dr. Sacks weaves together stories of his patients and of his own mind-altering experiences to illuminate what hallucinations tell us about the organization and structure of our brains, how they have influenced every culture’s folklore and art, and why the potential for hallucination is present in us all.

a compilation of fascinating tales
Revisado: 08-19-20
this is a fascinating compilation of hallucination experiences... its full of stories and knowledge.. it doesnt tell you why these experiences happen or their meaning but it provides some psychological, psychiatric and physical explanations... but as someone who experienced hallucinations in different contexts throughout life as well as having regular lucid dreams, I found this listen very interesting, relevant and fun... this book is certainly not boring...

pretty good
Revisado: 02-25-20
i felt that the writing style wasnt engaging... at least it wasnt engaging enough for me... or maybe performance by the author wasnt too good... idk, but something wasnt holding my attention... after 2nd essay i was about to return the book but then somehow the following topics got my interest, author's perspective and very contemporary point of view as well as good synthesis of various aspects of current life concerning her chosen topics got me listening... so, overall, i ended up enjoying this book and even had some friends listening with me to some essay so we could discuss... and the last essay really resonated with me... thus, overall, i think it was a good, interesting, thought-provoking and valid reading on very current topics ..

Historia
Verily, the story Biff has to tell is a miraculous one, filled with remarkable journeys, magic, healings, kung fu, corpse reanimations, demons, and hot babes. Even the considerable wiles and devotion of the Savior's pal may not be enough to divert Joshua from his tragic destiny. But there's no one who loves Josh more (except maybe "Maggie," Mary of Magdalan) and Biff isn't about to let his extraordinary pal suffer and ascend without a fight.
