Historia
Barnaby Gaitlin was never a bad kid, but he was certainly doing his best to impersonate one. As a teenager, he developed a habit of breaking into other people’s houses. But he wasn’t interested in the valuable loot - he just liked to read people’s mail, peruse their family albums, and maybe pocket a few personal mementos. Now almost 30 and divorced, he finds himself working for Rent-aBack, which helps the elderly and infirm move furniture or take down their Christmas trees. It’s the perfect career for Barnaby.

Such a Great Book
Revisado: 10-22-24
I read this at exactly the right time in my life. Every part of it resonated. I love the compassion and the intimate insight into the lives of all people, but especially those who are dying.

Creepy but Disappointing
Revisado: 01-03-24
I enjoyed The Housemaid, so thought I’d give this book a shot. There were many similarities to The Housemaid: long suffering “perfect”man, seemingly insufferable wife, outside locks on bedroom doors. I think the book started with a fairly interesting premise, and sometimes it really did give me the creeps, but the follow-through seemed rushed and unsatisfying. Plus, the constant graphic sex was just annoying. I guess someone must have told Ms. Hoover she needed to spice up her romance, but I found it salacious and a big turn off.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Disappointed
Revisado: 05-21-23
I wanted to like this book. I was even willing to overlook the implications that those of us who have faith in God are, at the very best, ignorant non-scientists . The story was supposed to motivate and inspire women to be all that we can be, but I felt patronized by the author and her holier than thou attitude. The protagonist, Elizabeth Zott, was not a likable character, but, amazingly , women all over the country became inspired by her chemistry based cooking show. The characters in this book were either reprehensible or boring. Even the dog, Six Thirty, was boring. Also, the plot was unimaginative and predictable. My opinion obviously differs from the majority.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Felt true but was hard to get through
Revisado: 05-09-23
Barbara Kingsolver is one of my favorite authors. In my opinion, The Poisonwood Bible is a classic. Though Demon Copperhead is based on a classic, it falls far short of The Poisonwood Bible. My thoughts may have been different had I read it rather than listened to it. The nasally twang of the narrator was irksome to me throughout. I think I’ll read it and see if my perspective changes.

Revisado: 06-20-22
Just love this book and the amazing narrator. It is laugh out loud funny but also very touching. I cried a couple of times. The protagonists are all in their seventies and eighties. The characters make growing old sound fun. At the same time, the painful parts of aging are given great respect.

Wonderful Read/Listen
Revisado: 03-06-22
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I listened to it and read parts also : about half and half. The narrator is spectacular! I particularly liked the voice she gave Nina. The only reason that I didn’t give 5 stars is because I wish there was more insight into the motivation of the villain. I also would have liked there to have been more evidence in Anna’s American life that indicated her extreme narcissism and what a psycho she was.

Historia
Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is a drifter. He’s just passing through Margrave, Georgia, and in less than an hour, he’s arrested for murder. Not much of a welcome. All Reacher knows is that he didn’t kill anybody. At least not here. Not lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone. Not in Margrave, Georgia. Not a chance in hell.

Glad I Kept the Book Despite the Narration
Revisado: 12-26-21
The story was exciting and interesting. The narration was so bad, I almost sent it back immediately. Jack is the only character whose voice I could tolerate, and he sounded more like 65 than thirty-something. All the women sounded ridiculously breathy, and most of the men sounded like stereotypical versions of old Deep South black men servants. Awful.

Narrator incredibly annoying
Revisado: 07-20-21
I love Fredrik Backman’s books, but the narrator of this audio book made the female characters’ voices sound like nails on a chalkboard to my ears. I gave up trying to acclimate at page 41. I returned the book to Audible and bought a hard cover edition. Unfortunately, I cannot get those character voices out of my head. I am going to have to really work at giving them new acceptable accents, tones and inflections.

Original Story
Revisado: 10-27-20
This is a good book. It was interesting and original. It was not great. The narrator is probably a nice guy, but nowhere near the best. Compared with the Cormoran Strike or Armand Gamache novels, the overall effect falls far short. But, I will give the series another shot because I like the protagonist, Carl Morck, and his assistant, Assad.
