In the 1990s, a “purity industry” emerged out of the white evangelical Christian culture. Purity rings, purity pledges, and purity balls came with a dangerous message: girls are potential sexual “stumbling blocks” for boys and men, and any expression of a girl’s sexuality could reflect the corruption of her character. This message traumatized many girls - resulting in anxiety, fear, and experiences that mimicked the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder - and trapped them in a cycle of shame.

Must read for people who grew up in this movement

I've been married for 15 years and found such healing from listening to this book as a 36 year old. This book gave me language to the struggles I've had for years from living in the purity movement. And I felt such validation as each page progressed, realizing that my sexuality wasn't there problem, but the messaging I'd been conditioned to believe. Thank you Linda, for this very important work.

Claire Danes is riveting!

The books is masterful in it's post-apocalyptic perspective. And adding to that the performance of Claire Danes creates a sensational audiobook you won't be able to stop listening to. This was my first encounter with Atwood's work and now I want to devour everything she has written. The voice she gives to the female perspective is necessary to the world at large. Clare Danes has never been more captivating. This is my favorite performance of her's to date!
