Historia
Ralph Elllison's Invisible Man is a monumental novel, one that can well be called an epic of modern American Negro life. It is a strange story, in which many extraordinary things happen, some of them shocking and brutal, some of them pitiful and touching—yet always with elements of comedy and irony and burlesque that appear in unexpected places. It is a book that has a great deal to say and which is destined to have a great deal said about it.

Joe Morton is amazing!
Revisado: 10-01-24
They could not have found a better actor/reader for this book. It has always been a challenge for me to read the text. I would often get lost. Joe Morton's performance really helped me get through. I understand why this is considered one of the classics in literature.

Historia
Dating back to slavery, Edgefield County, South Carolina - a place "easy to pass by on the way somewhere else" - has been home to generations of Lanhams. In The Home Place, listeners meet these extraordinary people, including Drew himself, who over the course of the 1970s falls in love with the natural world around him. As his passion takes flight, however, he begins to ask what it means to be "the rare bird, the oddity".

This book was everything!
Revisado: 01-20-24
I am not sure you you can touch upon history, sociology, hunting, farming, geography, sociology and so many fields of science and pack it all into one book. This author had the formula! The descriptions of the Home Place were so vivid, it made it seem as if you were there. With his scientific lens, the author described the beauty of living in rural South Carolina. He also at the same time provided insights into the experiences of a Black family and everything that played a role in his identity. Particularly as Black families had to overcome slavery, sharecropping, Jim Crow and more, the importance of family, faith, education and hard work played a significant role where excellence was expected. The story was heartfelt and it was great to hear the author’s voice in the audiobook.

So Much I Did Not Know!
Revisado: 01-07-24
The book gave so much informative information about the digestive system and its impact on your physical and mental health. It seems like this is common knowledge but after listening, I understand so much more now and will be able to take some preventative steps. It was fascinating to hear about how this area of the body connects with so many other organs and organ systems. Yes the scientific talk at times (in an audio format) was a bit difficult to comprehend (instead of reading in print) but I was still able to get the relevant facts. I was not able to visualize very well the recommended exercises for gut health (yoga); however, I have the terms to look it up and try later! I am not over 50 but as I am drawing closer, this book provided a lot of insight for me to pay more particular attention to my nutrition, exercise and overall wellness in this stage of life. The audiobook moved rather quickly and was at a good pace.
