Historia
Chief Inspector Wexford could discover no motive, no reason, and no suspect. Probably he was reading meaning where there was none; probably Angela Hathall really had picked up a stranger, and that stranger had killed her. But why such doubt? Was Wexford becoming cynical and untrusting, or was this simply one of the most ingenious crimes he had ever tackled?

Boring...

Not much really happens in this novel. A disappointing book by one of my (formerly) favorite mystery authors.

Historia
The Next Big Thing may actually resemble a city or town near you: listeners find it a fascinating place to visit, full of little-known street corners, memorable characters, lively music, and original comedy. It's a program full of unusual sounds and memorable voices; a program in which well-known artists like Stanley Tucci and Suzanne Vega casually rub shoulders with subway strap hangers, park bench philosophers, street-corner humorists, and kids on the local basketball court.

It's like a more boring 'This American Life.' For example: They had an article about scrapbooking. If that's your speed, go for it.

Historia
Edgar Allan Poe is an American boy in England, a child standing on the edge of mysteries. In 1819, two Americans arrive in London. Soon afterward a bank collapses. A man is found horribly mutilated on a building site and an heiress flirts with her inferiors. All the while, Poe's young schoolmaster struggles to understand what is happening before he and his loved ones are destroyed. But the truth has its origins in the New World and the Old, in a bitter episode of corruption during the War of 1812.

A lot of overblown prose, not much action.

If you like sitting through interminable "Masterpiece Theatre" episodes on PBS, this is for you. I personally found it pretty boring.

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Too long, but every inch was great.

This excellent book, filled with imagination and excellent writing, probably should have been in two volumes. Listening to it was a bit of a chore, because I never wanted to stop - I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. I ended up spending more time sitting in my car than I usually prefer.
The reading was particularly excellent, and a joy to listen to.
I can't wait for the sequel - I just hope it's of a more managable length.
