Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Another great one, I was constantly entertained and loved the little clues dropped throughout. Hope we don’t have to wait too long to find out what happens next!

Historia
Eighteen-year-old Stella Sandell stands accused of the brutal murder of a man almost 15 years her senior. She is an ordinary teenager from an upstanding local family. What reason could she have to know a shady businessman, let alone to kill him? Wow …..is about all I can say
Revisado: 01-17-23
Don’t hesitate to read this one. I hate books that are too easy to figure out. Nothing is worse than when I figure out the whole thing half way through and my thoughts get confirmed in the end. This is not one of those books. Just wait and see for yourself. I also want to make sure that anyone worrying they might not like it because it has been translated into English has nothing to worry about. There is nothing at all lost in translation. There’s not the slightest hint that it was originally written in a language other than English.
Be prepared to finish it in a day or two at most because you won’t be able to put it down.

Historia
If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong. When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And it's as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself. With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation - and dark humor - toward middle age and mortality.

Laugh Out Loud
Revisado: 06-25-18
I can’t remember reading or listening to any book that made me laugh out loud as much as this one did! I often walk while listening and was caught looking like a crazy person in public as I laughed loudly while passing strangers. In this world of traumatic news all around us, this book will make you smile, giggle, and think about life. Great stories and the Author is the perfect Narrator.

Historia
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

I loved, loved, loved this book. It made me laugh over and over as well as cry my eyes out on more than one occasion. It takes place in Ireland, Amsterdam, and NY, 3 of my favorite places in the world. The writing is outstanding, the narrator was incredible. Take a chance On this one you won’t regret it.

Historia
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

Any additional comments?
There were parts of this very unique book that I really enjoyed, and other times that I felt I was only reading it because I payed for it. It's almost impossible for me to describe this book or even fit it into a specific genre. Maybe I would call it "weird" and weird is not always a bad thing......

Kept Me Interested
Revisado: 11-02-16
Any additional comments?
This is actually two books in one, and I did enjoy them both. The first involves a story with a time travel twist that I liked. The second was a little darker and did keep me wanting to find out what happened, but sometimes feeling a little anxious. It was certainly worth the credit but not without a few minor lines repeated a little to often (a pet peeve of mine).

Historia
Britt-Marie can't stand mess. She eats dinner at precisely the right time and starts her day at six in the morning because only lunatics wake up later than that. And she is not passive-aggressive. Not in the least. It's just that sometimes people interpret her helpful suggestions as criticisms, which is certainly not her intention. But at 63, Britt-Marie has had enough. She finally walks out on her loveless 40-year marriage and finds a job in the only place she can: Borg, a small, derelict town devastated by the financial crisis.

A Great Follow Up to the Previous Book by Backman
Revisado: 11-02-16
If you could sum up Britt-Marie Was Here in three words, what would they be?
Odd Yet Beautiful
What did you like best about this story?
It's simplicity and difference from almost anything I've ever read.
Have you listened to any of Joan Walker’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is a wonderful follow up to one of my favorite books of all time,"My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry" which was also narrated by Joan Walker
Who was the most memorable character of Britt-Marie Was Here and why?
Britt-Marie, without a doubt!
Any additional comments?
This book can stand alone, but I would suggest reading "My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry" either before or after to give you a better picture of Britt-Marie's background.

Historia
Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is 77 years old and crazy, standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-men-who-want-to-talk-about-Jesus crazy. She is also Elsa's best and only friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother's stories, in the Land of Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas, where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal.

Just made me smile from start to finish
Revisado: 08-24-16
Which scene was your favorite?
There were so many its hard to pick just one but I do love the ending and how everyone needs a Superhero
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed out loud in so many places. Once I was sitting in a Doctor's office laughing and found I stood out in the crowd, but as Granny would say "If a sufficient number of people are different, no one has to be normal." I also found myself crying in several places but it was a cleansing kind of cry.
Any additional comments?
I read this book at a trying time for me and it lifted my spirits each and every time I picked it up. It is such a unique type of literature that I cannot see why anyone with an open mind would not pick it up and refuse to put it down.
