Historia
City dweller Gwen feels like she’s living a secondhand life. She’s thirty-eight, perpetually single, and in dire need of a dentist’s appointment. Her friends are busy procreating in the country, and conversations with her parents seem to revolve entirely around hedge borders and the trash pickup schedule. Above all she’s lonely. But then, isn’t everyone? Then she’s let go from a job she drifted into a decade ago and never left, and Gwen realizes it’s time to make a change, starting with cleaning out her apartment.

Adored this story about second chances!
Revisado: 07-12-23
I loved the side stories about pieces in the shops and the people who’d donated them. Then, the stories of the people who’d bought the items later. All of this was woven beautifully together with the character of Gwen and her pursuit of second chances.

Read this book!!!
Revisado: 06-18-20
I have never given so much thought to the idea of spirituality as it relates to medicine and pandemics. Larry brilliant is a national treasure, and he has quite literally changed the world for the better by helping to eradicate smallpox, not to mention his work helping the blind to gain sight. Not only is he a delightful writer, but his adventures are unparalleled. I expected a lot of science in this book, but what I got was very raw and human. Read it and grow!

Historia
During the course of his life, Malachy McCourt practically invented the singles bar and was a pioneer in talk radio, a soap opera star, a best-selling author, a gold smuggler, a political activist, and a candidate for governor of the state of New York. It seems that the only two things he hasn't done are stick his head into a lion's mouth and die. Since he is allergic to cats, he decided to write about the great hereafter and answer the question on most minds: What's so great about it anyhow?

Historia
At the end of the 1980s, when the Cold War ended, many, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, believed that democracy had triumphed politically once and for all. Yet nearly 30 years later, the direction of history no longer seems certain. A repressive and destructive force has begun to reemerge on the global stage - sweeping across Europe, parts of Asia, and the United States - that to Albright, looks very much like fascism.

This book made me feel sane again after a grieving period that has included hiding myself away from the goings on of today’s politics.
Thank you, Madeleine Albright, for writing and sharing this book. Despite its being “a warning”, I found it to be a sturdy island of guidance and knowledge in a sea of misinformation and borderline hopelessness. Being “optimists who worry a lot” is much better than letting the waves of despair envelope us.

Historia
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

Vitally important book for Americans:
Revisado: 02-14-18
I love that this book was written with such compassion, and I can't imagine continuing to fight the battles that Mr. Stevenson and his team fought in the face of overwhelming odds.
This book has changed my perspective of the death penalty and life sentences in ways that I hadn't imagined a single book could, and it's the best book on the American prison system that I've ever read.
Please read this book. It's a beautifully written, hopeful piece that came from a place of despair and struggle, and it will inspire you to become more merciful toward yourself and your fellow man.

Historia
One evening in 1951, an itinerant storyteller arrives unannounced at a house in the Irish countryside. In exchange for a bed and a warm meal, he invites his hosts and their neighbors to join him by the wintry fireside and begins to tell formative stories of Ireland's history. Ronan, a nine-year-old boy, grows so entranced by the storytelling that, when the old man leaves abruptly under mysterious circumstances, the boy devotes himself to finding him again.

This book traveled with me around Ireland
Revisado: 07-20-17
I bought this book before a trip to Ireland, and it helped me to understand more about the stories of the country. I also choose to read it because I feel in love with Frank Delaney's storytelling while reading Venetia Kelly's Traveling Road Show.
This book is a treasure. It took me a long while to finish it, but I enjoyed the storytelling down to the last drop. Listening to it while driving through Ireland made it all the more enthralling.

Historia
January, 1932: Ben MacCarthy and his father watch a vagabond variety revue making a stop in the Irish countryside. Ben's father, mesmerized by Venetia Kelly, the troupe's magnetic headliner, makes a fateful decision: to abandon his family and set off on the road with Miss Kelly and her caravan. Ben's mother, shattered by the desertion, exhorts "find him and bring him back", thereby sending the boy on a Homeric voyage into manhood.

Dogs are little therapy angels, maybe because they're so innocent and carefree. This book is kind of heavy, but also, it's sweet. You finish feeling like depression is okay, manageable at least, and you also feel like you know and love Bunker.

Historia
Decades before the American Revolution, Benjamin Franklin lamented that English settlers were constantly fleeing over to the Indians - but Indians almost never did the same. Tribal society has been exerting an almost gravitational pull on Westerners for hundreds of years, and the reason lies deep in our evolutionary past as a communal species. The most recent example of that attraction is combat veterans who come home to find themselves missing the incredibly intimate bonds of platoon life.
