I can’t decide of if I appreciate Finkel’s choice of subject matter or his fine writing. He captures the character and keeps me on the edge of my seat. Recommend reading all of his books.

Good plot but frustrating
Revisado: 10-16-24
I thought the main character (Florence) was overly naive. She wanted to be a writer but didn’t write. The idea of write what you know astonishes her. One of the first things you hear upon wanting to be a writer. She was annoying and selfish and in some ways not bright. From the beginning hard to like. I wish there was one thing I liked about her. The whining was incessant. The plot was interesting and kept me listening just to see how it ended. It’s a shame both main characters didn’t both get justice.

Historia
The Kennedy name has long been synonymous with wealth, power, glamor, and—above all else—integrity. But this carefully constructed veneer hides a dark truth: the pattern of Kennedy men physically and psychologically abusing women and girls, leaving a trail of ruin and death in each generation’s wake. Through decades of scandal after scandal—from sexual assaults to reputational slander, suicides to manslaughter—the family and their defenders have kept the Kennedy brand intact.

Least favorite Kaye Atkinson book
Revisado: 03-23-22
I usually love Kate Atkinson’s books. True, they start off slow but there’s always a payoff. It took a while to wrap my head around Life After Life, but I did find my way. I’m still processing the first Todd book, and have plans to reread this year. A God in Ruins was not interesting at all. In fact Atkinson has made a WW2 bomber pilots life tedious. I don’t understand how this boring character could have been so beloved by his family. The only part I enjoyed was the ending until something came out of left field ruined that. The narration was not helpful. It contributed to the tedium. So disappointing because I do love Atkinson.

On that same cold and snowy night, Ursula Todd is born, lets out a lusty wail, and embarks upon a life that will be, to say the least, unusual. For as she grows, she also dies, repeatedly, in a variety of ways, while the young century marches on towards its second cataclysmic world war.

If in doubt stick with it
Revisado: 01-20-22
The narration on this book is absolutely wonderful. For a quarter of the book I thought this isn’t for me, but I hung in there because Atkinson is such a great writer of character and dialogue. By the end of the book I loved to book, even if I don’t understand it all or what Atkinson did or why. It’s a lot to take in and I want to think about it for a while and I’m reading A God in Ruins next while this is fresh. This is a book that is going to stay with me for a while. I’ve added it to my 2023 reread list. If you’re in doubt if this book is for you though stick with it. I’m glad I did.
