Historia
The year is 1815, and an American, Miss Amelia Stonehold, has arrived in the Devon town of Axminster, accompanied by her "cousin" Serena Meleva. She's brought with her a list to tick off: find a property, investigate the neighbors, bargain for and purchase the property, staff the property and . . . possibly . . . find a husband. But Amelia soon finds herself contending with some decidedly off-list trouble, including the Honorable Captain Harold Roughtower, whose eyes are fixed on her fortune.

Bloated start/middle, rushed end
Revisado: 05-01-25
I've been reading and enjoying Mercedes Lackey for a long, long time, but this is not a book I'd recomend to anyone who's thing isn't long, dull, dry passages about shopping, prepping for a harsh winter that we never get to see, and a bit of light insider trading. The final conflict of the story comes almost completely out of nowhere -- we get a blink and you'll miss it hint about one part, and if you're familiar with Pride and Prejudice you'll likely guess the true nature of a couple of the characters.
This story would likely have been better served by reducing the time in London four or five chapters, then getting on with Devon and giving the final conflict some actual build up.

Historia
Rupert didn't especially want to be a prince. And he certainly never asked to be the second son of a royal line that really didn't need a spare. So he was sent out to slay a dragon and prove himself - a quest straight out of legend. But he also discovered the kinds of things legends tend to leave out, as well as the usual demons, goblins, the dreaded Night Witch - and even worse terrors hidden in the shadows of Darkwood. Rupert did find a fiery dragon - and a beautiful princess to rescue.

A Strong Start to the Series
Revisado: 07-31-24
As long as you can ignore the way a lot of people carry the Idiot Ball in regards to Rupert and his place in the succession, this is a very solid fantasy/horror/comedy book. Keating's performance is soothing and enjoyable.

Exposition Dump: the Book
Revisado: 07-31-24
I say this as a long time Simon R. Green fan (which means I might be giving this book more grace than it deserves): if you can tolerate hours of exposition -- and I do mean HOURS -- for the sake of the story, you'll probably enjoy this book. John Keating's performance is solid, and even if he cycles between about three different voices, I was never confused over who was speaking. Though I did find myself falling asleep listening more than once, though THAT particular problem is probably more to do with when I had time to listen, and I'd call it a testament to how soothing his voice is.
Stands alone reasonably well thanks to all the exposition dumps. You don't NEED to have read the previous Hawk and Fisher books to know what's going on -- we're treated to two very typical examples of their stories at the start of this one, before we finally make it to the actual plot, but I do suggest reading the first Blue Moon book to fully appreciate the irony of Harold and John.

Historia
This is the worst thing you can wish on a citizen of Discworld. Especially for the magically challenged Rincewind, who has already had far too much excitement in his life. Unfortunately, the unlucky wizard always seems to end up in the middle of, well, absolutely everything. So when a request for a 'Great Wizzard' arrives from the faraway Counterweight Continent, it's obviously Rincewind who's sent. For one thing, he's the only one who spells wizard that way.

There are some very shrill vocal choices involved
Revisado: 09-30-22
Long time Pratchett fan, so this is my... fourth copy of this story, basically? (Two paperbacks, one loved to death, and the old talking book)
The vocal direction is, to put it kindly, a choice. That choice being painfully shrill, to the point where I have no intention of buying any more of the books in the Rincewind subseries. Kind of a shame, I'm very fond of Colin Morgan as an actor.

Historia
Injured in a seemingly pointless war, Captain Nathan J. Northland returns home to Lorehaven to an uncertain future. He doesn't know what to expect, but it certainly wasn't being posted on an island full of vampires. An island whose local vampire dandy lord causes Nathan to feel strange things he’d never felt before. Feelings about fangs. When Viscount Vlad Blutstein agreed to hire Nathan as captain of the Eyrie Guard, he hadn’t been sure what to expect either. It certainly hadn’t been to fall in love with a disabled werewolf.

You know that gif of Zuko from Avatar: the Last Airbender, where he's got that scroll and wanting to know where the rest is? The end of this book is like that in ALL the best ways. This is a story that leaves me hungry for more.

An Old Favorite Invigorated With A New Performance
Revisado: 05-13-22
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore the old Discworld narrators. But it's rather nice to not be distracted by a voice that doesn't fit with who the in-story narrators ARE. Also nice to be able to find a FULL edition, as opposed to the abridged one Audible had for so long.

Historia
The stockings are hanging ready, the sherry and pies are waiting by the fireplace - but where is the jolly fat man with his sack? It's not right to find Death creeping down chimneys and trying to say 'Ho ho ho'—but someone's got to bring the little kiddies their presents. Or else they might stop believing. Belief is important in Discworld, particularly on the last night of the year when the time is turning. If the real man in the red suit isn't found by morning, there won't be a morning. Ever again....

Hogfather is a Yearly Re-Read for me, and this new performance is EXACTLY what it needed. Much as I love Stephan Briggs, his vocal range is a bit limited, and this cast breathes new life into a favorite story.

Historia
Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv, the orc barbarian, cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen. However, her dreams of a fresh start filling mugs instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners, and a different kind of resolve.

There's a lot to be said for a low stakes fantasy story, and this was a fun one. Fair warning to those who might turn on the audiobook version when they're feeling a bit sleepy: Travis Baldree has a VERY soothing voice, and odds are good that you'll find yourself having to go back a chapter or twelve after falling asleep.
